    Pre-modern migrations

Historical migration of human populations begins with the movement of Homo erectus out of Africa across Eurasia about a million years ago. Homo sapiens appear to have occupied all of Africa about 150,000 years ago, moved out of Africa 70,000 years ago, and had spread across Australia, Asia and Europe by 40,000 years ago. Migration to the Americas took place 20 to 15,000 years ago, and by 2,000 years ago, most of the Pacific Islands were colonized. Later population movements notably include the Neolithic Revolution, Indo-European expansion, and the Early Medieval Great Migrations including Turkic expansion.

This evidence indicates that the ancestors of the Austronesians’ spread from the South Chinese mainland to Taiwan at some time around 8,000 years ago. Evidence from historical linguistics suggests that it is from this island that seafaring peoples migrated, perhaps in distinct waves separated by millennia, to the entire region encompassed by the Austronesian languages. It is believed that this migration began around 6,000 years ago.[2] Indo-Aryan migration to and within Northern India is consequently presumed to have taken place in the Middle to Late Bronze Age, contemporary to the Late Harappan phase in India (ca. 1700 to 1300 BC). From 180 BC, a series of invasions from Central Asia followed, including those led by the Indo-Greeks, Indo-Scythians, Indo-Parthians and Kushans in the north-western Indian subcontinent.[3][4][5]

From about 750 BC the Greeks began 250 years of expansion, settling colonies in all directions. In Europe two waves of migrations dominate demographic distributions, that of the Celtic people, and the later Migration Period from the east. Other examples are small movements like ancient Scots moving from Hibernia to Caledonia and Magyars into Pannonia (modern-day Hungary). Turkic peoples spread across most of Central Asia into Europe and the Middle East between the 6th and 11th centuries. Recent research suggests that the Madagascar was uninhabited until Austronesian seafarers from Indonesia arrived during the 5th and 6th centuries A.D. Subsequent migrations from both the Pacific and Africa further consolidated this original mixture, and Malagasy people emerged.[6]
One common hypothesis of the Bantu expansion.

Before the expansion of the Bantu languages and their speakers, the southern half of Africa is believed to have been populated by Pygmies and Khoisan speaking people, today occupying the arid regions around the Kalahari Desert and the forest of Central Africa. By about 1000 AD Bantu migration had reached modern day Zimbabwe and South Africa. The Banu Hilal and Banu Ma’qil were a collection of Arab Bedouin tribes from the Arabian Peninsula who migrated westwards via Egypt between the 11th and 13th centuries. Their migration strongly contributed to the arabization and islamization of the western Maghreb, which was until then dominated by Berber tribes. Ostsiedlung was the medieval eastward migration and settlement of Germans. The 13th century was the time of the great Mongol and Turkic migrations across Eurasia.[7]

Between the 11th and 18th centuries, the Vietnamese expanded southward in a process known as nam tiến (southward expansion).[8] Manchuria was separated from China proper by the Inner Willow Palisade, which restricted the movement of the Han Chinese into Manchuria during the Qing Dynasty, as the area was off-limits to the Han until the Qing started colonizing the area with them later on in the dynasty’s rule.[9]

The Age of Exploration and European Colonialism led to an accelerated pace of migration since Early Modern times. In the 16th century perhaps 240,000 Europeans entered American ports.[10] In the 19th century over 50 million people left Europe for the Americas.[11] The local populations or tribes, such as the Aboriginal people in Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Japan[12] and the United States, were usually far overwhelmed numerically by the settlers. More recent examples are the movement of ethnic Chinese into Tibet and Xinjiang[13], ethnic Javanese into Western New Guinea and Kalimantan[14] (see Transmigration program), Brazilians into Amazonia[15], Israelis into the West Bank and Gaza, ethnic Arabs into Iraqi Kurdistan, and ethnic Russians into Siberia and Central Asia.[16]

Not all Arab Children are bomb carrying terrorists but all bomb carrying terrorist children are Arab.

Isn’t it ironic that here, where 2/3 of you are America/religion hating liberal pukes but are oh so tolerant of Muslims who’s goal it is to kill or convert you. Where’s all the comments about her being a mindless idiot who believes in some imaginary “god”?

I’d love to see any of you go to some Arab 3rd world hell hole and spout off about how stupid religious people are.

    • EWAdams says:

What evidence do you have that this little girl wants to kill or convert me?

Incidentally, I hear WAY more Christians trying to convert me than Muslims. How many Muslim evangelism cable channels are there in America?

Evangelism is rude and wrong — so offensive, in fact, that some countries ban it altogether. I don’t entirely blame them — how dare you try to change my religion? When did it get to be any of your business anyway?

As for Muslims trying to kill me — not one single Muslim has ever tried to kill me. Not one, ever, and I’ve lived in Muslim countries for 8 years.

      • David says:

But they do form official political parties so that even if you don’t convert you will still have to live by their rules.

Even if you hate the religious right in America it doesn’t have an official political party and it doesn’t have it’s own representatives. Mostly the religious right here in America just tries to keep from things they are against being officially endorsed, not the other way around.

        • ay dios mio says:

Oops, forgot to change my name back :D

        • tankrunner1123 says:

Yes and no, the peak of the religious right influence (along with the Neoconservatives) was during the Bush Administration but they didnt get anything they want. The only victory they got was when theSupreme Court struck down partial birth abortion (which I myself am against as well).

They have a party its called the Constitution party, give a look at their platform its pretty socially conservative.

        • deaddrift says:

Doesn’t have an official political party, huh?

      • NO_MO_BAMA says:

So “Evangelism” is offensive but people blowing themselves up in the name of their so called religion isn’t?? Wow, you have some serious mental problems!

How many Christian cable channels are there in the entire middle east? and you people wonder why we think you’re all idiots?

        • Igor the Vigorous says:

You really are an illogical idiot, NO_MO_BAMA. Your mind is….
It doesn’t make sense. Guilt by association doesn’t work, and saying that Muslims’ god doesn’t work either, because- hint here- if you knew ANYTHING about Islam, you’d know they worship the same God you do. Your mind has been twisted into illogical thinking… I feel kind of bad for you, at such a young age.

        Evangelism is rude and wrong.

Yes, cuz you know, the liberals are totally anti-religious. The fact that around half of people or more hold liberal views while only 14% of the world is actually atheist (80% being in Japan) totally works for that statistically. And apparently they nominated a christian presidential candidate just to mess with YOU! Also, just to be clear, if you were correct, the only solution would be to start lining the Muslims up in front of the death camps, right? Is that what you’re proposing?

        GET A F^%&ING CLUE

Below are some statistics from the Los Angeles Times, published as the State of California tries to close a $42 billion budget shortfall. It seems that illegal immigration has become the third rail of politics. No one wants to face that fact that it is costing states billions.

        From the L. A. Times:

40% of all workers in L. A. County (L. A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This is because they are predominantly illegal immigrants working without a green card.

95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.

75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.

Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers.

Nearly 35% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally

Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.

Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.

21 radio stations in L. A. are Spanish speaking.
In L. A. County 5.1 million people speak English, 3.9 million speak Spanish. (There are 10.2 million people in L. A. County. )

(All of the above are from the Los Angeles Times)

        • Over 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

Ubr, have you checked your garage lately?

        • Ceefax says:

(All of the above are from the Los Angeles Times)

No they are not. maybe you should check your sources, click my name for the snopes page on the email forward you copy and pasted.

        • Igor the Vigorous says:

          LOL. You fail…

        • Charlie Foxtrot says:

Damn, did you know 100% of all crimes in North America came from foreigners who came here illegally?

        • JKatkina says:

The thing that really makes me sad, worries me, is that you seem to think of these human beings that you’re talking about as some sort of vermin. You quote statistics that make them sound like an infestation that you’d like to stamp out.

The thing is that, regardless of where they came from, they are people. Can you imagine if you had been born in a place where people resent you simply because you were born? If you had to live your life out of a garage? You have access to the internet and enough free time and money to go around and argue on public forms about how other people live their lives. You’ve probably got it pretty darn good. Don’t you think you have enough good fortune to spare some compassion?

    • EWAdams says:

Wrong again. The illegal immigrants are essential to the American economy. They do the exploitive crap-wage jobs that Americans won’t do. They don’t get Social Security or unemployment benefits or any kind of insurance. If they have dangerous working conditions or their boss decides not to pay them, they have no recourse. It’s great for us! They’re the reason Americans can enjoy cheap fruit and vegetables, and we can get our buildings constructed and our lawns mowed cheaply. It would cost vastly more if we actually had to hire US citizens to do this work.

If you want to know why the country’s in trouble, there’s only one place you have to look: mega-rich jerks on Wall Street investing OUR savings in high-risk garbage. Oh, but they’re all documented American citizens, so it’s fine if they ruin the country — it’s their God-given right to screw up life for everybody else in a free-enterprise system.

      • Which is why one of they key elements in any solution to the illegal immigration problem (and it IS a problem, for a number of reasons) is going to have to be working out a means for would-be immigrants who are working class/laborers to be able to come here legally. It’s really pretty hard to get permission to come here legally if you’re not highly educated/rich.

        • tankrunner1123 says:

This is what I think we should do:

          1. Illegal Immigrants need to go bottom line. Its a slap in the face to real immigrants if the government gives them amnesty. We tried that once back in the Regan days and it failed. They want to come in they have to come in the legal way.

          2. Get rid of the massive red tape that is involved with the immigration process. As you pointed out, it costs a ton of money to come here and on average the process takes about five years. One major requirement is that immigrants must learn English bar none.

          • I absolutely agree that it’s unfair to put those who illegally snuck in ahead in line of those who’ve been sitting in their home countries waiting.

            • PortlandMark says:

You all are on the wrong track. I’ll solve the illegal immigration problem in a year:

Start putting people who hire illegal immigrants in jail. Once a few rich white folk start realizing they’re part of the problem we’ll start making some headway.

As Thom Hartmann says, “We don’t have an illegal worker problem in this country. We have an illegal employer problem.”

      • David says:

Yes it would make prices go up, but Americans did those jobs before, and if they had to they would do it again.
Saying “wrong again” doesn’t automatically make you right.

        • Problem is getting legal workers to actually show up on time, work hard, and do the job right the first time. Oh, and pass the pre-employment drug screen. We have some pretty major problems with the low-skill and semi-skilled end of our workforce here in the US, you know.

          • President Obey-Me says:

And yet it costs $10,000 a year to school each child in LA- are the illegals paying that cost with their taxes? I think not!

          • PortlandMark says:

I work in the restaurant industry, and I completely agree with you. It bothers me how much more likely an eager immigrant is to show up on time every day and do a good job than some whiny American teenager.

        • eddiepscetti says:

Then let me ask why there are people who are out of work that aren’t doing those jobs now?

          • ay dios mio says:

I personally think that’s the system making it profitable to be lazy (for actual citizens anyways)

            • eddiepscetti says:

Exactly! We could always implement Work for Welfare..

              • ay dios mio says:

I love that idea. I’m glad you’re being kind. Usually when I say that I get.
“ebil coservative racist, chessus u don’t wantz them to haz food?”

              • Zoreta says:

I wish there was some way to screen the lazies from the legitimately disabled people in the welfare system; somewhere or other I heard plans of a system requiring non-disabled to show proof of submitted job apps and the disabled to show proof of their disablement in the form of a doctor-signed form, but it would be hard as hell to try and get that kind of system wide-scale.

                • Eve says:

Actually it’s really hard to get disability. You have to constantly prove that you’re unable to work, with periodic social worker meetings and doctors’ notes. It’s not a one-time thing. Especially if your disability is something not immediately visible.

          • See my post, above….

Look, my son-in-law was telling me about hiring for an entry level position where he works. They said right up front that there was a drug screen. Of the eight people who showed up and were worth considering for the job, only three showed up for the drug screen. Only one passed it. *headdesk* So, guess who got that job?

There’s a certain amount of aversion to actually putting in a full day’s labor-type work (cleaning, pounding nails, etc.). It’s too haaaard. People’s baaaacks hurt. These guys characteristically show up on time and work hard, even when they’re hung over.

      • NO_MO_BAMA says:

When someone comes here. spits out an anchor baby and instantly starts collecting WELFARE, they are not “essential” and they are a NET DRAIN on this country. For every illegal who “works”, ILLEGALLY, there are probably 5 that don’t. They send billions out of the country. tax free when they actually do work and when 10%+++ of the population is unemployed, the last thing we need is MORE 3rd world trash coming here and endlessly reproducing.
You have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about.
They don’t get social security or unemployment because they are here ILLEGALLY They LEAVE places that HAVE “free insurance” so not having it is THEIR fault, I’m an American and I have no insurance either…booo hoo, that’s my fault too. People who hire illegals should be deported right along with them and nobody who does decent construction work hires them because they are useless.
Since you have such problems with “rich people” who pay for all the trash you seem to think is so important, how about you look at the liberal democrats that FORCED banks to give mortgages to people who couldn’t afford them? THAT is why the country is “in trouble”.
You know who’s really “essential” to the economy? All those evil rich people you pathetic communist wannabes love to whine about since they pay 90% of the taxes, who’s gonna feed all the welfare leaches when you losers get your way? NOBODY.

        • nobody who does decent construction work hires them because they are useless.

Hey, when I had work done on my house last year, the various hispanic guys working for the subcontractors did a great job; no idea whether they were legal or not, but I don’t see where there would be a correlation between immigration status and quality of work.

          • tankrunner1123 says:

There isnt a link, he is creating a strawman which is sad because people like me who want to have a decent debate on illegal immigration are ignored because the those who want to give amnesty to illegal immigrants focus their attention on people who give sensational arguments.

        • No1askedme says:

Hey, guess what?! There are only illegal immigrants because the REPUBLICAN party made it nearly impossible to immigrate to this country in the mid 1900′s! If you want them to stop illegal immigration, support the liberal side of the argument and make it possible for them to immigrate without waiting nearly 10 years for a bunch of random lottery processing!!! You know what else? The government only pays welfare for a given period of time to those who ARE LOOKING FOR JOBS. On top of that, welfare checks are not enough to live on SPECIFICALLY so people don’t try to do it! Also those “great and generous rich people” are the ones who benefit from the cheap labour that illegal immigration brings, they have no real want to eliminate it other than the ones who are racist bigots!

P.S. If you want to support your viewpoint I have no problem with that, just use FACTS and we might take you seriously.

          • The government only pays welfare for a given period of time to those who ARE LOOKING FOR JOBS. On top of that, welfare checks are not enough to live on SPECIFICALLY so people don’t try to do it!

          • Isildo says:

Have you looked at the immigration requirements for other countries? Honestly, I haven’t. But I’ve heard that America is actually easier to get into than many other countries. Japan, for example: if you’re not born there, (so I hear) you’re NEVER considered a full citizen. Australia is also supposedly very strict.

      • Isildo says:

Courtesy of a quick Google search and the NY times:

        These numbers describe LA County.

        About 1.1 million illegal immigrants
Cost: $350 million (per year, I assume?)
800,000 illegal immigrants use the county health system per year.
Each illegal immigrant with less than a high school education costs the economy about $13,000 over his lifetime.

        Interesting.

There are three sad things in this picture:
    1) Parents turning their child into an activist. No matter what the cause is, I don’t support this.
    2) Religious tolerance fail: if she could, this girl would not wear that veil, so do not tell me she is truly Muslim.
    3) People associating (or confusing) democracy with the USA. Adhering to democracy does not involve patriotism towards a country, and the USA were not the creators of democracy and were not the first of the modern world countries to be democratic.

    • Igor the Vigorous says:

It really does depend on the girl, Urgh. Just because you wouldn’t want to be forced to wear the veil might well mean her culture is something so completely and utterly different that she can’t even imagine your way of doing things. Like the Yanomamo, or the people sacrificing themselves willingly and excitedly in Bali. Although, there are a lot of people who I’d imagine want to re-interpret their religious text and live life more freely, this could truly be someone who prefers the way her society and principles are to ours. By the way, Urgh, Cognitive Dissonance is a powerful thing. The women in the culture may well have been wearing the veil before the religion even formed, for a number of reasons, and then the belief changed to fit the behavior. Tradition =/= religion.
Not arguing with you, just trying to make a bit of a point on #2.

    • Gustav says:

“There are three sad things in this picture:
      1) Parents turning their child into an activist. No matter what the cause is, I don’t support this.”

Uhm… it was likely July 4th? You don’t support waving a flag on July 4th?

“2) Religious tolerance fail: if she could, this girl would not wear that veil, so do not tell me she is truly Muslim.”

How is this different from any Christian parent dragging their child to church every Sunday? When she’s an adult, she’s free to decide for herself.

“3) People associating (or confusing) democracy with the USA. Adhering to democracy does not involve patriotism towards a country, and the USA were not the creators of democracy and were not the first of the modern world countries to be democratic.”

How is that depicted in this picture?

      • Isildo says:

1 and 3 were covered, I’d like to comment on #2. I know several Muslim girls and women who gladly and proudly wear veils every day. I’ve seen women walking around a public university in a full head-to-floor burka (sp?). No one forces them to dress this way, and I think in their eyes it’s not that different from a Catholic wearing a crucifix around her neck.

  16. SteelSkin says:

Wow, NO_MO_BAMA, you’re the the most splendid example of primitive bigotry I’ve ever had the chance to read in my life!

@xmetalheadnyrx: If I was an U.S. citizen, I wouldn’t go conservative on guns. No government should not let ordinary civilians carry guns. I think it promotes crime.

Steelskin, I personally don’t really have an opinion on gun control once I got thinking about this Terry Pratchett bit- The people in the city aren’t allowed guns, but crime rates with weapons haven’t gone down, but murders have gone up- because the people who are criminals and are going to kill people are going to have guns, regardless of the laws you make- people still do illegal drugs, because they like drugs. If they want to commit a gun crime, they’re going to find a way to do it, because they’re a criminal already and probably don’t care much about breaking a gun law if they’re going to commit murder.

Good point Igor, I’m in the UK and the police don’t carry guns (except for the Armed Response Units) this can increase the risk involved when trying to arrest an armed and dangerous scumbag and I think you are quite right about the gun laws corresponding to crime, it doesn’t necessarily mean that if there were tighter gun laws in the U.S. and/or more lax gun laws in the U.K. that it would increase/decrease the rate of gun crime.

        • xmetalheadnyrx says:

Agreed with both of you. People who want to use guns for bad things generally get guns no matter the laws, and also – police without guns sounds plainly stupid. There’s a saying by police, “Most people respect the badge, but everyone respects the gun”.

I think there are gun laws that are stupid, and gun laws that are not.

One I think is stupid is to allow concealed carry – I mean WTF?! Way to increase deaths!!! If someone gets mugged, and the muggee is carrying a concealed weapon, the mugger is gonna get shot. But if they’re not, and they cooperate (give them what they want) most they lose is their wallet/phone/ipod. All these things can be replaced. A life cannot.

Although on the other side, sport guns are different. No one can conceal a .22 (my rifle of choice for target practice) on their person. Easily at least (in theory you could wear baggy pants, and put the rifle in there, but…. that’s impractical). Also – rifles in general are hard to conceal, and to commit a crime with a rifle requires carrying it around – which offers serious questions as to why one would be carrying a rifle. I mean, taking one to a range is one thing (need a locked case, etc…) but one probably wouldn’t put their rifle in a locked case etc. if they were going to commit a crime with it, would they?

Oh this is an Indonesian schoolgirl welcoming Obama. I was there too, veil is the new fashion in Jakarta. Everyone’s wearing it as a fashion statement, not as a religious one. A kind of like your ugg boots and skinny jeans.
