All taxes, if left to follow their natural course, will increase over time. SS has increased due to senior citizen increase. Welfare costs have increased due to more people trying to take advantage of government programs. The thing that government doesn’t understand is what taxes are really for. Taxes are solely for raising money. We have so many taxes that are meant to sway us into doing certain things; taxes to keep us from buying alcohol and tobacco, taxes to encourage us to buy houses and start a family. It’s wrong that the gov uses taxes as a reward or a punishment, when all they should be used for is raising money for defense, roads, police, etc. Keep gov involvement limited to roads, police, defense, courts and corruption. Leave compassion to the people who actually have some.

2ndly: raising taxes suppresses growth, always. for example, new york has really high taxes, and businesses are leaving to go to florida in droves, just to escape the taxes. This is not good for anyone.

It will save money in the long run by streamlining the system and preventing the financial ruin of patients. It will cost money now, but is good later. Trouble is, the public latch on to sound bites even surrounded by a sea of important details, so it’s easier to say HC IZ LES $$$ PERIOD and get to work. Bush created the worst deficit. I’m sick of this, come to me with your criticisms of Obama in 8 years. Hell, he’s already tied with Bush in terms of positive change.

Also, The point of raising taxes is to keep them there, they were put there for a reason. You don’t raise taxes everywhere, you have high taxes here, low taxes there. This stimulates what you want to stimulate and dampens what needs dampening and, oh yeah, provides money for the gov’t to do things for you.

I am definitely open to new ideas, but one such as this will either succeed tremendously or fail tremendously. It will either provide a beneficial outcome that is an acceptable allocation of our taxes, or it will be another unnecessary drain on them. I want, more than anything else in this world, people to just consider consequences. If they want to pass nationalized healthcare, fine, but they need to consider the consequences of doing so, because just doing something because it feels right just doesn’t seem like a good tactic. If it is passed, the tax rate will increase (according to the bill which I currently have open) by around 2.5%. However, because many people cannot pay this tax, there is a provision that states that the Secretary in charge of the entire public option entity can adjust tax rates based on geographical and demographic changes at any time. This is an incredible power given to someone we don’t vote for, so we just need to weigh the consequences, intended and unintended.

Problem with raising taxes is that once they are raised they stay raised. By reducing taxes and increasing business activity you increase revenues overall. You don’t need to raise taxes but you could stop the ridiculous spending, and yes the Republicans are to blame here too.

You don’t have to be to understand how you get out of debt, pay off your bills, work hard, save and invest. Anyone can do it and it will pay off in the end, but no one wants to, everyone wants to be a millionaire, right now, no one wants to work hard anymore, everyone wants all the goodies now, upfront. not to burst your bubble there odumbaday – the media is controlled, our country is full of intolerant bigots and you’re one of them and, believe it or not, the conservative approach to things has been one of the reasons for controlling the media! omg! tv ratings, ratings on games, age limits on theater admittance, credit cards, renting movies, purchasing premium channels even that parental control on the interwebs – all forms of controlling the media.

i’m not sure where you live that’s totally uncontrolled but it sure as hell ain’t the u.s. – i mean, hell, on most aspects of TV europe has less censorship than the US.

if you would care to examine the facts, you would see a simple fact. During Clinton’s years, the economy steadily grew AND the deficit was low (and even non-existent sometimes). During the Bush years, the deficit was incredibly high and we saw a large economic crash. During the reagan years, the economy was ok, but the deficits were huge. The only one of the last 3 presidents to have both a stable growing economy AND a balanced budget was Clinton. You may not have liked his social policies, but you can’t fault his economic policies. The results are plain to see, and those that try to argue flaws in his policies despite the obvious results are grasping at straws to support their demented pre-conceived (and erroneous) notion that democrats are horrible for the economy. Republicans, of late, can’t seem to balance the stinking budget. They spend too much and refuse to raise taxes and the country gets farther into debt making it such that, at some point, in order to balance the budget, a democrat will have to raise taxes again. One would think that all these TEA people would realize that the only way to reduce taxes is to reduce the ridiculous amount of money we pay in interest on all our debt and vote for democrats who at least have a track record of moderating the deficit if not eliminating it. IMO, we should have a 1% budget surplus every year that we should be using to pay down our national debt. Until the republicans get their fiscal heads out of their asses, they won’t be getting my vote.

There is a balancing act the government plays with businesses. You’re both partially correct. Businesses give money its value, but only the government can keep money not based on any real value (IE the gold standard) stable. Without the government to keep inflation and deflation under control, money would be impractical because its value would swing back and forth violently. We’d be forced back into a barter system, not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that…

I dunno who caused it for sure, and frankly I don’t really care. All I know is that something needs to be done, and I saw no intent from McCain that differed from Obama’s current strategy. Obama just is throwing in some social reform along with it. All we can do is wait and see how it pans out, there’s no sense complaining about it, he’s the president and nothing is going to change that anytime soon.
