Please remember that the student who’s standing in front of those tanks “went missing” several years ago.

Such an iconic image. I am normally all for LOLZ, but it hard to find humor in any way regarding this one.

    • Doctor_What says:

He’s usually referred to as ‘Tank Man’, and his identity is very uncertain, so we don’t know if he was killed that day, months later, or if he went on to run an small tennis shoes manufacturing company.

      • paws4thot says:

It was a Tv documentary I saw, but the BBC were fairly sure they’d identified him, and found people who had nothing to gain (quite the reverse if anything) who claimed he’d suddenly “gone missing” after the initial hoohah had died down.

        • No1askedme says:

You can’t trust the media, even the BBC. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did “go missing”, but it’s hard to say for sure when the only picture of him is from behind.

    • VictoryNotVengeance says:

But for a message that will last for, potentially, forever? I think going missing is worth the risk. However…. this one doesn’t even have a punch line, so it is a poor LOL.

      From Wikipedia:

“Little is publicly known of the man’s identity or that of the commander of the lead tank. Shortly after the incident, the British tabloid the Sunday Express named him as Wang Weilin (王维林), a 19-year-old student[6] who was later charged with “political hooliganism” and “attempting to subvert members of the People’s Liberation Army.”[7] Numerous theories have sprung up as to the man’s identity and current whereabouts.[8]

There are several conflicting stories about what happened to him after the demonstration. In a speech to the President’s Club in 1999, Bruce Herschensohn—former deputy special assistant to President Richard Nixon—reported that he was executed 14 days later; other sources say he was executed by firing squad a few months after the Tiananmen Square protests.[5] In Red China Blues: My Long March from Mao to Now, Jan Wong writes that the man is still alive and is hiding in mainland China.

The government of the People’s Republic of China has made few statements about the incident or the people involved. In a 1990 interview with Barbara Walters, then-CCP General Secretary Jiang Zemin was asked what became of the man. Jiang first stated (through an interpreter), “I can’t confirm whether this young man you mentioned was arrested or not,” and then replied in English, “I think never killed” [sic].[9] A June 2006 article in the Hong Kong Apple Daily stated that there are rumours that the man is now living in Taiwan.[8]“

That clip was featured in “Equilibrium”. Impressing movie.

    • Dhoti says:

Um, yeah, because it was largely ignored by the world press until it appeared in that movie.

Also, I was watching The Fifth Element — another impressive movie — and they had a clip of a mushroom cloud explosion!

  3. keithybabes says:

Well, I reckon lying down would have taken more…

  4. This is rather old “news”. Maybe the guy didn’t even protest, he just wanted to watch the military parade?

  5. The Steve says:

That guy has big brass ones. Aside from that, this isn’t much of a LoL.

  6. Care Troll says:

it was actually his first time out of the house and he thought those were what buses look like.

  7. paulc says:

oh well… that’s this website banned in China for definite now…

  8. FamilySly says:

“Stop … or I’ll say ‘Stop’ again!”

  9. Pepijn says:

It would have taken more courage to urinate on the tanks while moving wen lying on the floor.

I don’t think this guy survived, this image is pretty well known so they probably killed the guy.

  10. brak says:

Is this the right place to say that this new format is freaking horrible?

  11. Mark says:

I’ve always hated this picture. What you never see in the thousands of people standing behind him.

  12. J says:

that was NOT a student, it was a prof who was trying to protect students

  13. thx1449 says:

    Tankman FTW (whoever you are)

  14. Captain Smith says:

Lol, that guy actually didn’t stand still, he continually moved in the path of the tanks. Otherwise they would have just gone around him.

  15. Anonymous Tank Driver says:

If I was piloting that point tank, history would have been different.

I’d have had to wash the tank afterwards with a pressure hose, naturally, but it would have been so worth it.

  16. gmc360 says:

Balls of steel. That’s right, hard hard steel balls. Thunderously hard steel balls. Balls of such strong steel. Steely strong balls of hard steel. I really really think that guy had big steely balls.

  17. defenderofmacragge says:

it also gets you run over by a tank.

  18. GOREslinger says:

    hahaha yeah. Fail.
