ivan – i don’t know if changing the mind about wedding/marriage will mean changing her mind about kids. if you’re already living as if you’re married then the wedding/marriage is just the piece of paper, a party and a few rings. nothing really changes. however, kids change a LOT of stuff. so if she was serious about no kids before i doubt that will change. however, i think most women (not all by any stretch) want to be married and have “their day” and be able to be the belle of the ball at some point in their lives. it may not have seemed important when you got together but it might be something that she wants to do now.

i can see changing your mind about a wedding, not about kids.

as for me… i’ve always known that i will be a wedding and kids type of person. i’ve had my wedding dress picked out since i was 12 (family heirloom). i’ve had the location picked out since i was about 18 too (“home” church). i don’t see me changing my views on wedding/marriage and kids anytime soon… but if i had been a no wedding/marriage type person i can see that changing.

i guess what i’m saying is see if she just wants the party and her “pretty pretty princess” day. if that’s all she wants – then nothing has to change and she’ll stop watching TLC before she gets addicted to other more dangerous shows (the aforementioned jon and kate).

Also, check the laws in your state concerning common-law relationships. In most states if you ‘stay together forever’ for less than 10 years, you’re gold! Otherwise, she’s going to get half of everything.

I’d add to what Shortright said that if the two of you are still in agreement that you don’t want to be legally married, but intend to stay together, you can have the big ol’ party of a wedding if she’s craving one and just call it a celebration of your relationship or something. She may well just feel like she’s missing out by never getting the pretty-pretty-princess dress and the cake. Cake is good, you know.
(And the lawyer in me would add that if especially if you don’t intend to marry each other, talk to an attorney about estate planning, advance directives, and a durable power of attorney.)

ivan, she definitely thinks she can (and has) changed you. although, as a vag1na-bearer (not sure if that’s a PK acceptable word?)… i’m hardwired to kinda side with her.
so i gotta ask… if you love her and want to be with her forever and want her to be happy, etc… why’s a stupid piece of paper standing in the way if it’s what she wants?

if she’s ok with no kids and everything else but wants the paper and the party and the rings, it’s not really the end of the world, right?
