Oh, no, I wasn’t contradicting you, D. I was merely saying that, in comparison to the U.S.’s 50 states (and bajillion “protectorates”), 15 republics is a “handful”. But, if we look at the etymology of “handful” I would think that it would mean fits into a hand or “more than 1 but less than 5″.

Yes, I pondered that response after I’d written it. Since handful is very vaguely defined, I suppose you might call it a handful, but the number that expression conjures up for me in the context of republics in a union would be more around 5 than around 15, hence my possibly silly post.
