What a way to start my Saturday, two of my pet hate politicians in the same lol-pic. Former Swedish prime minister Göran Persson is one of few now living politicians that make me sick by the bare sight of him. I feel that way about Georgi-boy too.

The rich may go to prison, but the poor end up there disproportionately often. Prosecutors are more likely to prosecute a poor teen/young adult, than a rich one, and seen harsher penalties against them. The rich often get off with a warning, maybe probation and get the lowest penalty possible. They’re more likely to receive plea deals, etc. Yes, the criminal justice system favors the rich.

Why not do the whole economic democracy thing? Workers own and run their working places, thereby they can themselves determine whether profits should be invested, be used to raise wages or cut working hours and so on. Could be quite cool methinks, would also mean we get a population thats more involved and active in issues.

And us losing the Olympics had nothing to do with Obama, his administration. It did have to do with the bribery and lies surrounding the Salt Lake City Olympics and the pretty bad Atlanta Olympics. It certainly didn’t help our bid having Richard Daley as mayor, a corrupt s.o.b. (and EVERYBODY knows it) who wanted the Olympics here because he’s run out of pockets in to which he can stick his fingers. And finally, the IOC has been at war with the USOC recently: the USOC decided that they had every right to start up an Olympic cable channel without getting permission from the IOC. So, if you want to blame anybody for the loss of the bid, blame the USOC, who believe that they’re above the rules set by the IOC and can do pretty much WETFTW.

Now VNV, I’m a big fan and not knocking you here…..

BUT

I work in the court system (here in Aust) and I’ve found that it’s either the very rich or the very poor who stand the best chance in court. The rich because they can afford good lawyers, the poor because they’re either on Legal Aid or ALS (our indigenous people’s legal aid). Those of us who fall in between are the ones who can’t get top representation and we’re more likely to either plead guilty to avoid the trouble or go for the cheapest over the best counsel.

Hence, it seems to me (as a sort of biased observer) that it’s only the uber-riche or the poor who”"get away with it.

Yup Keith, that’s how my nation (Australia) was born.

Sydney* was a place to send those evil abhorrent folk who..(gasp).. stole bread to feed their family when they weren’t allowed to work (eg women, paupers, etc), fought off a sexual affront from one of their “betters” .. or committed one of any number of “crimes” in which these days they’d be seen as the victim, not the perpetrator. The soldiers who policed it all operated on a loose system of rum, favours and bribery.

The whole colony was forged from people who didn’t fit the norm. And I think we turned out okay in the end, didn’t we?

“Forced pregnancy” to me immediately meant the exact opposite: that you’re made to carry a pregnancy through whether you want to or not. Which to me is more repugnant than almost anything else I can think of at the moment. It is sexual slavery at its absolute worst.
