Amen. The thanks of this Carolinian and my family are extended to both those who have served, and who are serving.

Given the date today, such a perfect description of yourself!

    • TychaBrahe says:

Someone (more than a few someones, actually) fought and died for your right to be a jackass on the Internet.

    • Giz Gunnar says:

This would have been a great comment from anyone other than that war-mongering draft-dodger John Wayne! It would have been more appropriate to post a comment from Jimmy Stewart, Charles Lindberg, Ted Williams, Henry Fonda, Gene Autry, and many other who gave up well-paying careers to fight in WWII.

  2. VictoryNotVengeance says:

I think the John Wayne quote is talking about “Courage” not “Heroism”. You can be afaid and do something, but that doesn’t make you a hero. And I also don’t see any saddles. Wait a second… is this one of those “get on soldier nuts” lols again? No wonder is wasn’t funny…

    • shortright the ivanist who thinks clothes are overrated says:

VNV… normally i’d be with you 100% but today is veteran’s day… so we should be a LITTLE bit more accepting of the “soldurs r hiros!” LOL today. but just today only.

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Oh I know what day it is. And if someone had put a funnly lol having to do with veteran’s day, I might have laughed. But as I didn’t, I posted my critique as per the usual.

        • Justacarolinian says:

Shortright, I don’t take Veterans day as hero worship of anyone in uniform, but rather those who served. Most members of any branch of the military will admit that there are the less than honorable in uniform. It’s one of the reasons they try to hold everyone to a high standard. (Wash out the weeds)
And from personal experience, no one makes more jokes mocking and laughing at the military than the military. Often pointed at other branches of service, but not necessarily. Think about the guys making the pictures we do laugh at. Like the beer in the giant mouse trap, ect…..
Veterans and the currently serving are not the only heroes, but they do deserve the recognition at least one day a year. I don’t see anyone whining about mothers day, and I can think of plenty of horror stories there too.
Thank You Shortright for the respect you have shown.

          • shortright the ivanist who thinks clothes are overrated says:

my dad was 8years army during the vietnam era, he never had to go overseas luckily… but i have a healthy respect for the armed services.

my main comment was that this was NOT a good “honor the troops” macro, nor was it funny. it kinda sucks on all fronts. if they wanted something for veterans day they could have very easily used one of the more obvious ones that i’ve seen in the voting pages. there was one in arlington (i THINK) and all it said was “thanks”. sums it up pretty well and isn’t craptabulous like this one is.

            • Justacarolinian says:

Actually, I had a typo above. It looks like I meant to say hero worship is ok for those who serve. I meant to say that it was respect for those who serve.
And I understood the lack of humor on this one. I didn’t find it all that great myself. I do feel it was someone’s honest attempt at respect. And that I respect.
So I felt, even with your feelings on the actual LOL, you went out of your way to be respectful, and that deserves Kudos.

        • I agree with Shortright that, honestly, if there’s an appropriate time for a “Thanks, soldiers!” serious-lol, Veteran’s Day is the time.

However, I can’t resist at least trying for the funny.

        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Tell me about it. I can also predict what will be said, by whom, and at what time. It is pretty tedious. But the comment section would be no fun if no one commented.

          • shortright the ivanist who thinks clothes are overrated says:

i’m ok with naked pool parties, and bbqs and actual comments on the image… but the pissing matches (“you said this” “you said it first” “yeah, well you’re a meany poopy head” “nu uh, you are”) are what’s pissing me off.

we said it in the PK group and it’s been said by mothers for many centuries (that might be an exaggeration)… i don’t care who started it but i’ll finish it.

don’t make me have to finish it. you’re (all of you) grown up… just stop it.

    • NHSparky says:

Once again, VNV, demonstrating your asshattery for all the InterWebz to see. FAIL.

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I beckon the InterWebz. Look at me! Read what I write! Hate me fore it if you must! But see here! There are many opinions to deal with! If I be an asshat in your eyes then that, truly, was my aim. And hear this oh judgemental Interwebz:

Long Live US Imperialism! Here’s to -always- having a need for soldiers!

        • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

I’m going to be honest you only say you don’t care what people think when they disagree with you. If a person who normally agrees with you calls you out you will backpedal to appease them.

          I’m just saying. Be nice.

          • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I was being nice. And I’m going to be honest and say I don’t care what people think even if they agree with me. This place is the home for opinions. If you agree with me, fine. If not, fine. And by backpedal do you mean, not fight with them? Because that is because someone who normally agrees with me doesn’t attack me. I have not taken back any opinion I have ever stated regardless of where my “friends” stand. And I don’t intend to.

            • He’s gonna catch you on that statement. Just wait a few weeks till he has searched all your comments, and you’ll get a blast of copy-pastes that prove you wrong!

              • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Bring it on! I am sure he will have the same luck as Justa coming up with a post about me supporting the minority. And if and when he does try to post some quotes, there better be a way for us all to go back and read the whole post to look for context. I know what I say. I say it on purpose.

                • Justacarolinian says:

Actually, you did the work for me. Though you will never admit that. And you ignored what I said about the context of it all. Of course, that would mean admitting you were wrong. Something you seem incapable of doing.

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I did do the work for you, and yet nothing was ever found. And since you can’t do any better, I stand that you just made a typo or misread something, and then got called on it. You find me the context, and I will buy into your nonsense.

                    • Justacarolinian says:

See, there you go, off the bat with insults. You were talking about white collar/ blue collar crime, and who did what. And how certain people got called on what. And it was actually a racist rant on your part, and I’m not the only one who noticed it.
And it wouldn’t matter if I pasted quote for quote, you would back pedal and make it say something else. Which is why I didn’t waste my time in the first place. Even after I learned how to hunt for things easier, I knew it would be a waste of time. Anyone who doesn’t agree with your ideology is evil, and therefore must be mocked and denied.
Who knew you and Dick Cheney were kin?

                      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Which part of that was off the bat? The part where you misread, the part where you made a typo, or the part where the claim was nonsense? All of those seem like pretty on the bat forgivable offenses. So “there I go again with my explinations”.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

There you go again, ignoring how you mock others….. It didn’t prove you right, so it’s nonsense.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I wasn’t mocking you. I think you made an honest mistake. You are the one clinging to your failed comment.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

I think it was your failed moment, followed by an egotistical rant that would make Rush Limbaugh blush.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I am sure you do. ;) I would say the same thing to you if I was wrong too. Way to go!

                        • Justacarolinian says:

The difference, you are wrong. And if you chalked it up to a typo, like you said, you would have dropped it, and it wouldn’t be discussed today…..

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I know you are but what am I. Now go get that quote or for God’s sake leave it alone. I even gave you clips of all my points for you can copy and past in the “find” option. Don’t be lazy.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

As I already said, YOU posted it for me. Context dude. You were going on about how blacks and minorities were automatically this type of crime, and whites were that type of crime, and how you must speak up about it and defend.
I never said it was a word for word quote, I actually said different. And that you would back pedal and redefine what you meant. I think it was you and Froo that got in that discussion.
Also, as I said, if you truly thought it was a typo, it never would have gotten mentioned today.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Hold on a second. You made a whole fight saying I defend the minority because I said I defended minorities in America? lol! You are such a fool…. You… know they are not the same right?

                        • Justacarolinian says:

Actually, my point was how you talked out of both sides of your mouth. Minority when it was convenient to you, majority when that suited you. Or, as ADM called it, back pedaling.
I would be careful calling anyone a fool. It only speaks about the one saying it. Disagreement is one thing, but you go to far. Every time.

              • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

Have I ever done that? No.
The worst thing I’ve ever done is call people out.

            • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

By backpedal I mean you play nice. Like this.
When talking to a conservative person you voice your ideas in a way that makes you (sometimes) seem nuts. A person who basically agrees with sort of calls you out on wording and you say “oh wait let me explain” and you replace it with a nice neat way of saying it. That’s perfectly acceptable, but why does the conservative person not the get teh same treatment? Justa hasn’t been as mean as you and Ivan thinks he has. Wrong yes, but not as much as you say. He hasn’t done anything I haven’t seen done worse around here by other regulars.

              • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I will be glad to explain anything I have said, and I have certainly tried. But there are a couple of ways people respond to my explanation. They can see where I am coming from but disagree and leave it alone. They cannot see where I am coming from and leave it alone. They can voice their disagreements or agreements in a civil way. Or they can nearly immediately start talking nonsense about world take over plans, or Obamasiah, or Marxist Utopia. The latter is nothing more than insults. Now there are probably 5 or 6 people on here that go straight to the latter. I will not play nice with them, because they are not nice to me. And while you are scrounging for quotes, why don’t you find a couple where I insulted an individual first, instead of just responding to a comment that was meant as a personal insult. You will probably find it right between the one about back peddling and support for the minority.

                • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

I’m not scrounging up quotes. I didn’t quote anything. I’ve never done that.

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I know. I am not saying you have to. I am just saying they are not there. So looking would be pointless. Screen Shot or it didn’t happen.

                • Justacarolinian says:

Yeah, funny thing. You don’t seem to recall not being nice to people in the beginning, that simply had a different opinion than you. And after you acted like you were a demi god over them, then they got tired of the insults.
And I quite specifally remember you speaking highly of Marx, and the ideals he described. Even went into depth on how it all should be established. If that isn’t a Marxist Utopia, what is?

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

In the begining, I was attacked and I responded as such. If I stand that I hold the moral high ground, thats because to me, I do. Don’t have to get all fussy that I type that way, because its my personal opinion. You have a right to yours, and you can complain about it all day, but on every instance I can remember, you started it. I just think you are very good at placing yourself midway through a conversation to start some sh*t after others have already started the attack, and then when I respond to you, you want to pretend to be mister innocent. You act like my little brother in that every time I get “in trouble” you go running up to my “parents” to tell them “how much you love them”. I know what you do and how you do it. I hope it gives you that sense of acceptance you are looking for. But you aren’t fooling me. Because… well… you did it again this time.

                    • Justacarolinian says:

Your very first comment to me, the first one I remember seeing on PK, you went into a rant, calling me names and bashing.
You deem yourself God, when it comes to an opinion, and belittle all others as not worth saying. You have no tolerance for others opinions.
And here you are whining because I come back from the store and see a conversation I feel I want to join, yet I see you jump in all the time. Hypocrite. And I do recall someone mentioning that too you, and you demanding you had the right to say what you wanted.

                      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Anyone else notice how many jabs are placed in Justa’s post? That are just absent in mine? Its like the whole paragraph was an attempt at an insult. Or how as soon as shortright “corrected” me he was there to tell just -how- appreciative he was for all that respect. Its a ploy. Every post he makes is come sort of an attempt as an insult, followed by how insulting I am to him. Its rediculous.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

I respect Shortright’s answer to what was a rather nasty thing of you to say. It’s not all about you. Get over that.
And you are already on the defensive today, and flying with the insults. Like I said, the very first post to me, you insulted me. Anyone who doesn’t tote your line will be mocked.
And your response completely ignored how you jump in on others and demand you have the right to your opinion. And turn around and go off in a self righteous rant when I jump in.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

I think you “respected” shortrights answer convenietly to put yourself in the middle of what we were saying. It may be an opinion, but your very nature tells me you would. You may have felt that way, but I certainly think you make sure to take the time to insert yourself into my threads.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

I took time time to compliment a friend who did something I respected. It’s not all about you.

                        • VictoryNotVengeance says:

If thats what you go to say to sleep at night. Go right ahead.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

Not at all. I wasn’t the only one who noticed it, but the only one who would speak up loudly.

                • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

                        • Justacarolinian says:

Pale ale it is. My choice too.

ivan i just saw your new name change! i like it! lol.

as for good sam adams beer… they make a delicious organic cherry but it’s only available for about a month out of a year. for the most part i find their beers a bit wimpy…

                        • Ivan The Shortrightist Who Thinks Shorty In Clothes Is Overrated says:

I’ll try to find it. I like the winter ale too. Have you tried it out of one of their glasses yet? I’m sending away for one, to see if it really enhances the flavor. I’m such a nerd. :)

                        • shortright the ivanist who thinks clothes are overrated says:

the proper glass CAN help the taste of a beer… depending on where it pulls in it will trap different things in different portions of the glass affecting the taste. for example, a very very dark black imperial stout should almost always be served in a glass similar to a brandy glass so that the sediment can settle at the base and not float into the drink. i have no idea if the sam adams glass will improve the taste of their beer but i’d say it’s worth a shot.
i don’t remember if i’ve had their winter… i’m sticking to mostly the fall beers right now because i’m loathe to admit it’s almost wintertime. i like harvest moon (blue moon’s fall seasonal), it’s a pumpkin ale with a slightly sweet taste. as much as i’m ignoring winter, i had such a great day on november 2nd… great lakes christmas ale went on tap across ohio. it is my favorite christmas beer of all time. if you can find a great lakes distributor by you, buy it. otherwise, go to the great lakes site and pay a fortune for them to ship you a 6pack… it’s worth it.

                        • Justacarolinian says:

I just left an actual grocery store…… They have the winter lager stocked high.

                  • VictoryNotVengeance says:

If I “just pointed out” that you have “no spine” “just to be honest” You would probably consider that looking for an arguement. You brought it on yourself, and yes, now would be a good time to let it go.

                    • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

What are you talking about. I didn’t personally attack you like that. I’m just sick of everyone here pretending like they are the only one’s not doing it. EVERYONE has done it at some point. Everyone just needs to get over it and quit playing the victim.
That’s all yours and Justa’s arguments come down too. You two just trying to convince everyone that you are the victim.

                      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

Depends on how you view what you said. I certainly took “back peddling” as revoking my statements to get along. To me, that is on the same grounds as having no backbone to stand up for your beliefs. So… to me, you did. And just cause you run in to play mediator doesn’t mean you don’t make it worse. Lets take today for instance, had it not been for what -you- said, i would not have responded, and now justa wouldn’t be desperately flining insults. So… maybe you are the problem here? Ever consider that?

                        • Justacarolinian says:

Wow, you have to belittle me in threads I’m not even in. And you call me desperate.

Yes I do, because you are. And you had already inserted yourself in this post before I wrote this. So.. you are still fair game.

Its ok. I have heard more than a handful of the conservatives talk trash about justa. So I guess it goes hand in hand.

Oh really? Amazingly enough, when I ask the same of you, you “didn’t have the time”. Little hypocritical much, eh? Just because “nobody likes you” does that bother you? Do you have to believe me? Think about that before you start attacking me with “nobody likes you” comments, which you often do, like right above this post, because that doesn’t affect me at all. And yes, those posts about you were real, and really, I just don’t have the time to find them. I only keep record of everything I say. Call it vanity.

                        • In all fairness, there are only a small handful of Republicans (me being one of them) here and I honestly don’t remember any of us trashing Justa. Maybe disagreed, or mentioned he was wrong, but I don’t recall him being trashed.

    Thanks for the Remembrance.

Not sure, in this particular case, that it matters much whether the word is “courage” or “heroism.”

Everybody should ought to visit those beaches…they’re a formidable climb on a warm summer day with your family and friends…it had to have beenabsolute hell to do it in the cold wind and rain, soaking wet, with some bastard shooting at you and a heavy pack on your back.

Then go a few miles down the coast and see where so many brave young men and women lay, never to return home again.

  5. No doubt they were brave, but I don’t think many of them would have done this if they weren’t forced to.

    • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

That’s the point of bravery, you aren’t forced to.

      • VictoryNotVengeance says:

But these soldiers were forced to. What are you saying?

        • paws4thot says:

IIRC none of the Allied powers other than possibly the USA had conscription during WW2. If you volunteer for the forces during a war I don’t know that you can say that you were forced to invade other countries and shoot at people who were shooting back.

          • Justacarolinian says:

There was a huge amount of volunteers in WWII also. Not everyone, but a lot of them. And a lot who simply waited to be called. There had to be just as many honorable people back home keeping the nation going. (Farming, producing, ect….)

          • HelOnWheels says:

Thanks for bringing that up, paws.

Many countries’ citizens did volunteer; they didn’t have to be conscripted because they deemed it their duty and responsibility to protect their homeland. One of my grandfathers was 19 and studying in St. Petersburg when Hitler invaded the USSR. His entire graduating class AND every single student at the academy (none of them older than 20) joined the armed forces that DAY. They didn’t have to because they were students, but they ALL did. People were lying about their age so they could serve.

            • paws4thot says:

No problem; I only said that the USA might have had some conscription because I wasn’t sure either way. I certainly did not mean to imply or infer that US citizens did not volunteer; I’m well aware that some of them at least did!

              • Yes, the United States did use a draft during WWII as legislated under the Selective Training and Service Act (STSA) of 1940.

                • Vila Restal says:

And Britain had the call up (Conscription by another name) I would read Spike Milligans books on the subject – “Adolf Hitler – My Part in his downfall” and the others, especially when Spike got his call up papers.

          • keithybabes says:

Not true. Britain had conscription in WW2, starting in October 1939.

          • xy says:

The USA had “the draft” – which lead to the phrase “draft dodging” and “hiding out in Canada until the war is over@.

(“The WWII draft operated from 1940 until 1947 when its legislative authorization expired without further extension by Congress. During this time, more than 10 million men had been inducted into military service. With the expiration, no inductions occurred in 1947″)

This, I would argue, was forced conscription.

            • xy says:

(Sorry – can you ignore the last line. I misread your post initially).

              • HelOnWheels says:

We here at the Department of Redundancy Department are fining you 5 interwebs for your redundant statement as, by definition, conscription is forced. You can pay at the Office of the Clerk of Fines & Penalties & Assessments office.

My uncle was born in Poland. At 14, when Hitler took his country, his family had him smuggled out. He lost his entire family to the death camps. He made it to Britain where they put him on a farm. He ran away, lied about his age and joined the British Army. No one forced him to fight. I will be observing 2 minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. to honour everyone who has ever fought for something they believed in and allowed me to have the priviliges I have today.

2 things kept marion out of the military – his knees were next to shot from playing high school football, and when he tried enlisting he was told he was more valuable to the war effort as an actor doing rah-rah movies than he was as a bullet catcher and he was refused — at least that’s what the rumor was coming out of hollywood at the time

        • Greg H. says:

And Jimmy Stewart was underweight and refused to be allowed to serve. HE, being a REAL man, said “Screw you!” and fought like hell to be allowed to serve, which he did, starting in 1940, nearly two years before we got in the war. Not only did he serve, he was highly decorated, an incredible soldier, but he refused to have the press make a big deal out of it, and he gave up 156,000$ a year for 22.50 a month so he could DO THE RIGHT THING.
THAT’S a goddamn courageous hero to me.
He also re-upped for Korea and Vietnam, major stud.
John Wayne ain’t fit to lick his boots.

I’ve never even considered military service, and I can still know this to be true.

    • Clownfish says:

I’m glad someone else noticed the irony of juxtaposing a photo of Omaha beach with a quote from someone who conspicuously avoided serving in WWII. There’s the anecdotal story of John Wayne being booed on a PR visit to wounded soldiers during WWII, which I think says it all.

  8. Wat? says:

I get what you are doing, I understand the significance and I appreciate what was done then and what is still being done now. But unless somewhere in your twisted mind you found this to be funny this website is not the correct forum for this type of image.

    • janet24 says:

I don’t understand your problem. They’ve set aside a post today to be respectful and support the troops. They aren’t trying to be funny. They’re saying thank you to our soldiers.

      • Classicist the Zappaist says:

This isn’t a “thank you” soldier site. This is a funny site. Or at least it’s supposed to be a funny site.

        • Justacarolinian says:

Aren’t there posts on other holidays? And not even funny ones.

          • Default User says:

Many humorous newspaper comics will occasionally run a memorial strip for special occasions. They are regularly venues of humor but the author/artists find something that they feel needs honoring/remembering and write a serious comic for it. I’ve never heard someone b*tch about their choice of venue.

          • Chris says:

Yes, some other holidays are listed here. Life isn’t all LOLs people. Since the military is often the butt of jokes on this site showing a thank you picture every now and then will not kill you.

      • Wat? says:

I realize they are not trying to be funny but this website is. People don’t visit this website for something thoughtful or meaningful. They come here to look at funny pictures of cats and to just have a quick laugh. I have no problem at all with what the poster is doing, I just feel this is not the appropriate place to do it.

      • xy says:

So what’s the excuse for the several other million “fellate our soldier” captions we keep getting?

    • Yes, well all I can say is you should have been around when Obama won the election. OMFG, we were inundated with posts about his win to the point where even the people here that supported him were ready to hurl. So, if they take one post and make it about Veteran’s Day, let it pass and quit being so f*cking judgemental.

  9. E says:

Thanks to those that have served and are serving, you are true hero’s.

Now why are they using a quote from a man who used his movie star status to cop out of the service? Try to use a hero like Jimmy Stewart or Clark Gable next time…. if you want a movie star that was a true hero that is.

  10. Anonymous says:

Not to be disrespectful on Remembrance Day but this is a lol website, not propaganda and ‘ooh wow this guy’s a hero’ website. No more of these heroism, bravery and courage pics should come up on here.

  12. Let me just add my .02 here:

To all the Vets that went before me, thank you for being my mentor.
To all the Vets that came after me, I hope I was able to be a mentor.
To those still serving, I salute you.
To my friends that were lost in conflict, you will never be forgotten.

It’s apparently gotten lost somewhere that hundreds of thousands of people have died fighting for freedom.

Don’t lose sight of that as you sit there on your asses fighting with each other over stuff that doesn’t mean jack compared with what veterans have faced and sacrificed.

    Shame on you.

Thank you to my Dad, who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Thanks to my step-father, who served in Vietnam, and other places that must remain nameless. Thanks to my son-in-law, who served two tours in Iraq, and will be going to Afghanistan next year. Thanks to my youngest child’s ex-boyfriend, also deploying to Afghanistan. THanks to my nephew, who serves as a journalist in the Navy. Thanks to my beloved husband, who served in the air force of the former Yugoslavia, and the proud new army of the present Croatia. Thanks to all my Palestinian friends who served their country honorably and well.

Hey – we managed eight funny ones in a row before we got back down on our knees again. I’d say that’s a new record (which, in an of itself, is pretty depressing).

We get it. Soldiers good. Bad people bad.

But there are plenty of other sites out there where you can spread that message.

This site – this is for comedy. It’s supposed to be funny. Which this clearly isn’t. It did not make me laugh.

And – on a semi-related note – using someone who never served during a war and (from all accounts) took no positive steps to do so as a model for heroic action is kind of pathetic. If you’re not going to be funny, at least don’t be hypocritical either, because you come off looking like a tool.

I am honored to be associated with these heroes in this picture.. No matter how strongly we may disagree with any policy or any war, the troops serving should never take that anger.
