Preachy and too long. I voted no on this. Would be funnier if there was no snow in the picture at all.

  2. orly says:

mighty ? My toilet paper is mightyer.

    • PortlandMark says:

I believe the Finns spent the better part of WWII fighting a vicious guerilla battle against SOMEBODY… be darned if I remember whether they were killing Russians or Germans, but whichever it was, the invaders learned to respect the Mighty Finn!

      • I Like Peanut Butter says:

It was both sadly. While Russians were “friends” with the Germans they invaded Finland and got their a$$es handed to them. Then came the Germans so the Allies couldn’t use Scandanavia to help support the Soviets.

The Finnish ski troops Kicked A$$ though.

“If my unit was caught between the Germans and the Russians, I’d attack in BOTH directions”

          - attributed to Gen George S Patton (who claims he wished he’d said it)

        • minfrd says:

Brief history lesson: In WW2, Russia attacked Finland to invade it. Finns asked the Allied Forces for help to defend themselves against the communists, and got nothing. The Russians did not succeed despite that, much to everyone’s surprise (you can check any map of Europe for why that makes the Finnish Military mighty). Towards the end of the war with Russians Finns got some help, weapons, troops, and such, from Germany. After Finns and Russians made peace, the Finns attacked German troops in Finland and chased them out. Finland was never in alliance with Germany or run by Nazis, and while the Allied Forces were busy sending help, weapons and such, to their much valued Russian allies so they could defend themselves against the cruesome Finns (check map again to detect sarcasm) no-one in their right minds can blame the Finns for accepting any and all the help they could get.

            • Alcari says:

also, look at the Winter War. Short summary here:

At the start of the conflict, the Russians held the initiative and went in with twice as many men, 200 times as many tanks and 30 times as many aircraft.

              Finnish losses:
              25,904 dead or missing
              20–30 tanks
              62 aircraft

              Russian losses:
              126,875 dead or missing
              3,543 tanks
              261–515 aircraft

              • Vila Restal says:

Actually it was another case of “The Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend”. The Finns would have sided with China, France, the USA, or even the Vatican City, if they were fighting the Russians, but in this case the Germans were, so they got the Finns support. (However for what is said here, the Finns dealt the Russians an extremely bloody nose, even though they were eventually defeated. The Russians were eventually forced (I believe by the United Nations) into accepting the Finns nationality, although they did take land away from the Finns.

                • OLUT says:

Yeah, they took part of Karelia. There are a few groups who want to see Karelia returned to Finland, ProKarelia being one. In the past several years since WW2, it was almost a taboo to consider Russia giving it back, didn’t want to rattle the peace between the two.

          • Mako says:

Actually Russians did succeeded in conquering Finnland (after the Mannerheim Line has been breached Fins had no defences left and were forced to surrender), although more important matters (ie. preparations for conquering the rest of the world) made Stalin shift changing Finnland into Finnish Soviet Republic onto later date.

            • Danbala says:

              How do you define conquer?

              • Mako says:

Make the invaded one unable to defend and protect own teritory – after the Mannerheim line has been breached Finns were all but defenceless, their tenacity meant absolutely nothing next to lack of defensive positions.
Also, when counting USSR gains of the winter war don’t forget to add Bukowina and Besarabia to the pool, since after Finnland Romania decided there was absolutely no point in defying russians (as they would get what they want no matter the cost) and gave up what was demanded immediately (which was a mistake on Stalin’s part, but that’s another story)

                • Danbala says:

Yes – Finland was all but finished, but the Soviet Union didn’t expend those last resources on actual conquering. Finland was – most probably – beat, but no one dealt them the death blow. Which, to me, is not the same thing as conquering, which was why I asked. Thanks for explaining what you meant.

            • SJ says:

“Actually Russians did succeeded in conquering Finnland (after the Mannerheim Line has been breached Fins had no defences left and were forced to surrender), although more important matters (ie. preparations for conquering the rest of the world) made Stalin shift changing Finnland into Finnish Soviet Republic onto later date.”

We did lose that war in sense that we had to submit to the Russian demands. But Russians never conquered Finland or occupy it. Also Finnish army didn’t surrender to Russians. This may not seem significant, but there is enormous difference between ex-soviet satelites and allies and Finland.

Finland remained independent nation althought Russia had/has significant effect on forein policy (come to think of it, so does USA, but that is much more discreet).

          • Danbala says:

The neatest bit of it all is where Finland ended up having to pay the Soviet Union, and send workers to their railroads etc. after the war. :p

        • orly says:

Nobody CARES, don’t you realise ? Go back to building your igloos.

      • bagggy says:

        Actually, they fought both

    • Christina says:

Oh, really, just like your grammar…?

Fear not, if we don’t have snow, we just attach wheels to our skis. Or those things that make tanks move (whatever is is in English anyway…)

    • DeSoft says:

Get ur ass to finland, bring ur toiletpaper too. FACEPUNCH TIME

  3. PortlandMark says:

In before the climate change deniers show up to shut down the lol…

  4. IT’S THE BELGIAN FLAG!!!!!11!!ELEBENTYBUHZILLION!!!

  5. PortlandMark says:

Actually, wouldn’t crossing the pavement on those skis ruin their surface?

    • Mina says:

I don’t think that’s pavement. It looks like gravel, which I think would be worse. Maybe those are junky “practice” skis and they don’t care if they get ruined?

      • mabsba says:

You just step carefully until you reach the snow — no sliding!! (As my father used to yell when we were *stepping* our cross country skis off the road.)

        • Mina says:

That makes sense. Never been cross country skiing, is it fun?

          • viking gal says:

It’s sort of a cross between hiking and skiing. If you like hiking, and you know how to dress for exercise in the winter woods, you probably would love it!

            • viking gal says:

I know, I know, viking gal goes cross country skiing–SUCH a typecasting! :P

              • Mina says:

At least you typecasted yourself though! :) I love skiing and kind of like hiking when I get the chance to. So I’d probably enjoy it. I’d have to go somewhere where it snows though.

                • mabsba says:

Yes, snow is mandatory. Unfortunately, a lot of great cross country skiing places have been over-run by snowmobiles, so you lose any nature experience. :(
I always loved the absolute dead silence of the woods when out cross country skiing. Plus animals!

Best place to learn is fields — no trees to run into! :)

Some ski places have cross country trails (ours do), so if you go skiing, you could rent some equipment and try it on the same trip.

            • Starrfade says:

I thought I liked it, and then had to do it as part of my teacher training (we have to go through gym class all over again) when you’re forced to skate-ski in old fashioned cross country skiis, it stops being fun.

          • Danbala says:

            No. It’s dreadfully dull.

      • Danbala says:

Looks like lawn and mud to me. Perfectly safe for skis.

  6. Bluking says:

It`s funny because global warming is a myth.

    • Justacarolinian says:

No, global warming is happening. The debate is over the cause. Man made vs natural cycle.

      • knot says:

No… that humans are playing a role in current climate change isn’t under debate either.

Unless by “debate” you mean “agreement among the people who know what they’re talking about, and vociferous objection from nincompoops”.

However, in this case the culprit would appear to be not climate change but snowplows…

        • Justacarolinian says:

Yeah, debate to you means “shut down anyone that doesn’t agree with you.” That and label anyone who doesn’t agree with a bad name.
There are just as many scientists who don’t believe it to be man made as there are who do.

          • PortlandMark says:

Sorry, JAC, but the numbers don’t support you. The only scientists still opposing the proposition that mankind has affected global climate change are the ones taking money from carbon intensive industries and the ones receiving money from Christian colleges that value political power more than scholarship.

            • Justacarolinian says:

As opposed to the ones taking money from politicians and laundered money through organizations who want the power to dictate people’s lives.

              • bad fairie says:

you mean exactly like the ones who want to dictate how everyone lives, ie: christian nation, abortions illegal, marriage only for heteros, and heaven forbid if someone loses their job (or never had medical coverage in the first place)
tell us again who wants to dictate how anyone lives….

                • ay dios mio EWAdams no es gracioso says:

                  Both sides.

                • Justacarolinian says:

And I have spoken about them too. Though I will say I’m against abortion, as it’s the killing of a human being, and not any different than murder.
I’ve also spoken about marriage being a religious term and rite, and one that the govt should have never been involved in.
And I don’t see that insurance is something the Federal govt should be in either. Can we as a society have a social net? YES. And per the 10th Amendment, should be handled by the states.
The ironic thing to me, is the very people who want centralized govt and control are against it when it doesn’t support their point of view.

                  • Vila Restal says:

Actually it hasn’t really been conclusively proved. There’s not been enough research done on other contributing factors such as the sun either getting closer (or hotter) – Explains why the days seem to be getting shorter, increased gravity=increased spin. Or the fact that we are currently in a Glacial Ice Age. As with all things the Ice Age must eventually come to an end at some point (it can’t be in a continuous ice age until **cough** hell freezes over :-) ) and so we might be viewing the end of the last Ice Age. Yes there might be contribuiting factors in human beings, but it doesn’t explain everything. People are looking for a simple answer when the answer just isn’t that simple and the question is even harder.

            • I Like Peanut Butter says:

Sort of like the ones that are proposing man made global warming are taking money from the “Green Alternative” movement. Or liberal think tanks that also have agendas. Sorry Portland, this is not as “mainstream” as the liberal left would like the world to believe. It’s a great scare tactic, especially in movies like “Day after Tomorrow”, “Inconvenient Truth”, etc… but really the “facts” touted can and have been disputed.

              • Justacarolinian says:

Even the left leaning govt of the UK issued a statement about “Inconvenient Truth” and had to tell kids in schools about 9 lies in that film before they could show it to them.

                • keithybabes says:

                  I don’t

                  • keithybabes says:

Know what happened there! Meant to say I don’t believe in man-made global warming either. Plenty of power-crazed people are jumping on the bandwagon in an attempt to tell people what to do, or to parade their righteousness. Thirty years ago we were told there was a new ice age coming.

                    • Justacarolinian says:

Read below statement about Reader’s Digests.

                      • keithybabes says:

Yes, Reader’s Digest was great for that kind of stuff. My dad used to buy it in the 70s. We were all going to freeze/starve/choke to death unless all mankind got together (under the benevolent leadership of someone or other) and did as we were told. Plus ca change.

          • knot says:

“Yeah, debate to you means “shut down anyone that doesn’t agree with you.” That and label anyone who doesn’t agree with a bad name.”

            1) Arguing with nincompoops isn’t worth it.
            2) I’d skip the name to spare your feelings, but politeness cannot justify dishonesty.

“There are just as many scientists who don’t believe it to be man made as there are who do.”

Not true. Spend a few minutes on Google Scholar.

        • I Like Peanut Butter says:

Actually I tend to lean towards the fact that “Global Warming” (which the mean temperature of the earth has gone down the last two years) is b/c the Earth is the closest it’s been to sun in about 10,000 years. And the lack of “warmer” climates or “hot spots” over major metroplois areas that have higher CO2 output which should in term make that area above the city be warmer tends to make me question Global Warming. Funny how about 15 years ago all it was about was the Ozone layer and how the hole was going to get so big in 15 years that humans would need to waer SPCF 3000 to walk on the surface. (OOPS!!!)

        • Gizmo42 says:

          Dear God *facepalm*

Please stop drinking the cool aid. Do a google search for Dr. Martin Hertzberg and get some education please. He’s not the only one proving how wrong the man made global warming lie is, just the one I happen to know of off the top of my head. There are plenty of scientists, etc who disagree with the whole notion. So yes, it IS under debate. I think a retired meteorologist with a PhD in physical chemistry might know at least a little about climate change.

The whole MMGW thing isnt about science. Its about money and power. There is no money for grants disproving the theory, only for those trying to prove it. So if you want money there is only one side to be on. For the govt, its a way to regulate more things and tax/fine the heck out of anyone they can.

          • HelOnWheels says:

“There is no money for grants disproving the theory”

I suggest that you too stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Energy companies, coal mining companies, other carbon intensive industries have spent millions in trying to disprove the MMGW theory. Both sides have spent ridiculous amounts of cash in attempts to disprove each other.

Just because some people don’t agree with you doesn’t mean that they haven’t done the research. Don’t come in here out of the blue and act indignant and superior, douche.

            • Justacarolinian says:

Which is why I said it was debatable.

              • HelOnWheels says:

Regardless of my opinion on MMGW, Gizmo was being an interloping douche and needed to be put in its place.

                • Justacarolinian says:

                  Agreement there. *sprays Troll-B-Gone*

                • Gizmo42 says:

So having something to do besides sit on here all day every day making comments makes me an interloper on the occasions that I do comment? Ok, whatever.

Apparently informing someone to educate themselves is a douche. Unlike those who call names and attack anyone who disagrees with them.

                  • HelOnWheels says:

“Apparently informing someone to educate themselves is a douche”

Yes it is. You have no idea what we know. None. We probably know a fvckload more than you do but you’ll never comprehend that because you think you’re smarter than us.

“attack anyone who disagrees with them”

You have no idea if I disagree with you or not. My stance about this whole discussion was made to show that these things are debatable and that you’re being a conceited troll.

                    • Gizmo42 says:

WTF is your problem? My first comment was made to Knot stating that they (I use “they” since I dont know if Knot is male or female) should educate themselves on the subject. Its obvious from “No… that humans are playing a role in current climate change isn’t under debate either. ” that they have only listened to one side and not studied both sides of the matter. Did I call Knot an idiot or stupid or some other name? NO. Did I say that I’m smarter then Knot? NO. I do believe I know more about this particular subject though based on Knots post. I have studied it a lot.

Then you jump all over me and start calling me names for no reason. I never said I was smarter then anyone else on here. And you’re right, I dont have any idea what you know. Based on your comment about the money being spent I would say I have probably studied the financial side of it more then you.

Not sure how any of this makes me conceited or a know it all. I read alot of posts on here about other subjects that many commenters know a lot more then I do. I dont think of them as conceited know it alls, I read what they say and I learn something.

            • Gizmo42 says:

Uhh.. you might want to do more research yourself. Lets take your statement of “millions” for those opposing MMGW, that is a drop in the bucket compared to the BILLIONS for those on the other side. Do some checking on how much is spent for each side. And, btw, those companies you cited are also spending millions advertising “clean” or “green” energy solutions, wonder why that is.

              Nice language btw.

    • Bluking says:

      My job here is done.

  7. jcr says:

The Finns rock. Who else would think of fighting a war on skiis? And it actually worked! The Russians never saw it coming. The Finns dressed in all white and flew down a hill and into russian camps shooting as they went. Then they hid in the dense forests where no one could find them. All the Russians sat there and were like “What the hell just happened???”

    • HelOnWheels says:

“Who else would think of fighting a war on skiis?”

Uuuhhmmm…most countries that get a lot of snow?

        • HelOnWheels says:

Oh, I wasn’t trying to be mean, just a smart-a$$. Should have used one of these ;-)

          • viking gal says:

The US had the Green Mountain boys, bunch of fellows from Northern NE (mostly Vermont), and they saw serious action in the Alps. The survivors started the US ski resorts that we have today.

Can’t help thinking of ‘White Christmas’ now..

              • Vila Restal says:

Actually Mountain Troops have been going on since the year dot. Germany had them in both wars. Austria had them in both Wars. (I believe that even Poland has Mountain Infantry.) Britain has them (kind of!!) but they are either covered by the Royal Marines or the Gurkhas. All you need to have Mountain Infantry is to have something approaching a mountain range in your country. http://www.climate-skeptic.com/2007/11/more-ways-to-vi.html

Skepticism is an important part of science, get facts from all sides and make up your own mind.

    • Alcari says:

“Skepticism is an important part of science”

      No, it’s not.
Science is not about believing claims, it’s about supporting your claims with evidence and checking the experiments done by others to ensure they’re correct. I don’t need scepticism in science, because everyone is using proper evidence.

Scepticism is something you use in popular media, where statements do not have sources and where facts are hardly ever checked. Popular media is NOT science, it’s entertainment. Peer reviewed papers are science, go read them if you want facts.

      • Gizmo42 says:

“and checking the experiments done by others to ensure they’re correct”

Part of checking experiments by others is trying to prove them wrong. So in this statement you actually agreed with The Skeptic. If someone isnt able to prove the other wrong, then their science is sound. If they are able to then the experiment needs to be re-thought. Its how science works best.
