On a more serious note, Obama is the first “leader” of the country whose fixes are so obviously going to make the situation far worse. FDR might be forgiven, at least for the first five years of his administration, for dragging a recession into a depression. He could arguably be said to be trying a different solution, socialism. But when it dragged on for another 5 years, at some point he should have realized his solutions had failed. He did not. It was only WWII that got us out of the great depression, had it not been for WWII, FDR might of had us in depression for several years after his death. Going back to Obama, I dont want to be in a great depression until 2018 and beyond. Of course that assumes his re-election, but given the debt he has racked up already, the effects of his policies might become clear early in his administration. Carter’s mistakes led to high inflation, stagnation, and a 21 percent mortgage rate. When the economy gets that bad, it becomes increasingly hard to blame it on your predecessor.

I loved everything Stephenson wrote until Anathem. His “System of the World” trilogy is absolutely brilliant in it’s attempt to fuse an excellent story with a description of financial theory. I just wish I could get into Anathem; most of his books leave me thinking that someone just a little bit smarter than me gets a whole ‘nother level of the book that I’m too dim to perceive.

I don’t really have time to sit with books, but I get through many by listening to them while I walk, wait in line, etc. I love it. I also get a digest of the New York Times on weekdays. There are “frequent listener” programs that make it more affordable – just download to itunes, then onto the mp3, et voila.

I love audio books, and a highlight of the day is at 11.30 every weekday when they read a book (as a serial, not one book per day). Currently it’s “Het huis van de moskee” by Kader Abdolah (The House of the Mosque). Great way to hear books I’d never get the idea to buy or loan to read on my own.

Sometimes, yep. To hear someone like ee cummings read well is a far more rewarding than simply reading it, even if you read it aloud yourself. It’s meant to be an auditory experience.
