OMG, if my tutoring students wrote as well as you do, I would be in seventh heaven. English is the WORST language to learn, I swear.

You’ll enjoy this: my friend was complaining about the way her husband always bickers about what ‘this coming weekend’ means. She (and I) say it’s the one that starts tomorrow; he says it could be either that or the one ‘coming’ next week. It usually devolves to throwing pillows at him at that point.

“Old” doesn’t mean “senile.” By all accounts she’s very much all there.

As for Charles, he’s made some pretty bad misjudgments in his personal life, but he does have a brain. He was able to earn a strong Second from Cambridge, which is no mean accomplishment; he was the first member of the Royal Family to earn a University degree. William was able to graduate from St. Andrews, which is also one of the top universities on the planet. Harry, poor fellow, has a mild learning disability, but he does the best he can with what he has.

We have a constitution. It’s just that it’s called ‘The Magna Carta’ (The Great Charter) rather than ‘The Constitution’ that’s all. It was signed in 1215 by King John (as in the King John of Robin Hood fame) and all other Constitutions are based upon ours. Even JFK said so about the American one. It was signed at Runnymede and the area was visited by JFK himself and there is a monument to mark the event.

FYI, there are four copies left in existence. One each at two different Cathederals, whose names escape me for the moment, and two at The British Museum.

I’m sure if you google it, you’ll find lots on it.

Well said, out of all the options (even as a welsh nationalist )I still prefer constitutional monarchy .An Independant Wales could decide wether to demand a resident Prince (at least he has a place here now) or do something else. I like the idea of the Chief Bard of the Gorsedd holding the office, but no politians that would get us the likes of Thatcher or Blair !! Yes HM Queen Elizabeth II and one day Charles III and William V ,much better. Charles is a good egg, Cammilla is lovel and they should have let them get married in the 1970′s.

I have some contacts in New Zealand who tell me that some of the strongest opponents of a Republic are the Maori. Why? There is an early treaty between the British and the Maori by which the latter allow the former to settle on the island, each side agrees to respect the other’s rights as a community, and each people is allowed to govern itself according to its own laws and customs. Queen Victoria was granted, I am told, the title of “Supreme High Chief of the United Maori Tribes” (or something along those lines, I may not have the wording quite right), which title Her Current Majesty also has.

The Maori antirepublicans hold that their political existence is tied to their relationship with the Crown; they believe that in a hypothetical ‘Republic of New Zealand’, they’d be just another ethnic group.

Some of them–and some white monarchists, too–want to sever the British and New Zealand crowns and have EDWARD become King of New Zealand. Edward has strong ties to NZ; he spent his ‘gap year’ there, has a vacation home there, and has said that it his favorite of the Commonwealth Realms.

Of course, that is very unlikely to happen. I’m just reporting what I am told.

William was able to earn a fairly solid degree from St. Andrews, which is one of the top universities in the world. Charles has shown considerable poor judgment in his private life, but he isn’t stupid–he did earn a second at Cambridge, which is no mean accomplishment. He has done a lot of good work through his various charities. Give credit where credit is due.

You may think that monarchy sucks, but really, a republic does too–just in different ways.

How much of a Nazi sympathizer he was is debatable; and, to be fair, a lot of the worst of the Nazi regime wasn’t known until late in the War and afterwards. If you read some of the early Nazi/Fascist propaganda and try to lay aside your historical knowledge of where it led, it does have a certain appeal to it. Yes, Edward wasn’t all that bright, so it is not surprising.

Mussolini made the trains in Italy run on time; nobody was able to do that before, and nobody since. Give credit where credit is due. After all, as anyone who has tried to take AmTrac knows, we can’t manage it here.
