  2. UBERGRUE says:

Loony or not, you have to admit he is quite sexy.

    • фдуч_шяь says:

Admit it, the only reason you think he is loony is because your “stupidbox” told you to. In the meantime in the last decade, it is the U.S., not Russia (or anyone else for that matter), who holds the record in killing most people around the world. And a huge lead at that too…

      • Bitter wino, the god of inebriation says:

We don’t think he is loony. We think he is a dictator. There is a difference. Now N. Korea’s Kim Jong-il, that is another story.

Creature, you’re right. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to bats everywhere for comparing their feces to Kim Jong-Il. It was highly rude and insensitive of me. I hope you can forgive my error.

          He’s not a dictator either….

          • Bitter wino, the god of inebriation says:

To be technical, you are correct. However, he is well on his way.

Wikipedia tells us that a dictator in modern parlance is “… is generally used to describe a leader who holds and/or abuses an extraordinary amount of personal power, especially the power to make laws without effective restraint by a legislative assembly.” The debate is over whether the Federal Assembly provides ‘effective’ restraint.

He can’t really be classified as President for life, which would have been my first choice, since he switched from Pres to Prime Minister (along with the requisite legal changes to maintain his political dominance).

            • jackson says:

Although he might be frightening over here, sometimes a dictator is needed for brief periods of time to clean house. You might not like his methods, but for the first time in a long time pensioners are getting their pensions, the military is starting to guard the nuclear and chemical weapons, the major cities are slowly climbing up from under the blanket of post soviet corruption. The Yeltsin free-for-all was good for no one. His leadership was weak and the results, amusing as his drunken bouts were to the outside world, the results in the country were not pretty. Maybe the power has gone to the man’s head; trained by the KGB and all paranoia must come naturally. But I still think he has decent intentions for the nation as a whole and his leadership has the potential to do some good. I doubt the country will slip back into an actual dictatorship, too many capitalist interests would be adversely affected.

Vlad may not be a nice person, and he is definitely a successful, power-hungry politician in an environment that where failure=death, exile, or jail, but I don’t think he can be called crazy.

A few years ago in America we had a ton of people saying the same things about G.W. Bush. “He brought dignity back to the White House,” “He’s seeing the nation through its darkest hour,” blah, blah, blah. Unfortunately he, too, was and is a warmonger and possibly a psychopath. I’m glad that Russia loves their Putin, good for them, really. I’m just wondering how long the love affair will last and how many nay-sayers will suffer not-so-mysterious deaths before the affair ends.

          • devkat says:

          • Aremis says:

“he bosted russian economy set up laws to make russia a safe place, helped riase awarness of russia as a superpower and for what?”

Okay, I gotta invoke Godwin. Hitler fixed the German economy and made Germany a safe place (well, for most Germans, anyway) as well. I make the comparison not to say Putin is Hitler reborn. He very much isn’t. What I am saying is that doing good things for a country doesn’t exclude the possibility of doing bad things.

I’ll give Putin and Russia credit for carrying on with the political process and allowing it to go forward democratically. And he has certainly bowed out of the limelight a bit. Medvyedev is definitely the headliner in Russia now, as well he should be.

But I’m not a fan of changing the process for selecting local leaders from elections to appointments or changing the voting from direct candidate elections to elections for parties as he did in 2004. The system he changed to is legitimate and is common throughout the west as well. What was troubling is that it definitely consolidated power with Moscow and it was done without much input from the Duma, which is definitely the behavior of a dictator. Since then, at least with internal politics, he hasn’t misbehaved as much. But for a few tense months in ’04 I was seriously concerned that Russia would shift back to a Soviet-era system minus, perhaps, the Marxism. His KGB pedigree, while no guarantee of trouble, certainly lent a shade of worry on any criticizable action as well (Just as Bush Sr.’s CIA past and Cheney’s questionable legal suggestions and defense activities under Ford caused me serious pause).

“to get insulted by stupid americans who dont know a thing about politicts or global affiars.”

I don’t? I’m actually quite well read on politics and global affairs. And I make a particular point of reading up on news of nations other than my own from sources outside the US. I’m not usually one to boast about my own credentials, but you left this one wide open:

“HE IS NOT PRIME MINISTER ANYMORE.”

As someone who considers him/herself more educated than us stupid americans, tell me, who is the current prime minister of Russia? (Hint: He’s a former KGB agent and the predecessor of Medvyedev as president) He stepped down as president when his term was up and reworked the role of Prime Minister to bring a little piece of his old power with him.

Vlad may not be a dictator, per se, but he has certainly engaged in some rather dictatorial behaviors. And whether or not Russians like him is irrelevant. They liked Lenin and Stalin, too. And Americans loved Bush Jr. post 9/11.

        • charro says:

Psychopath = Sociopath = Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Most people confuse “Psychopath” with “Psychotic”, which is incorrect. Psychotics have had a break from reality.

Incidentally, the common misconception that Schizophrenia is the same as Multiple Personality Disorder (now know as Dissociative Identity Disorder) comes from the fact that “schizo” means “split”; however in this case it is referring to a split from reality.

          Just sayin. ;-)

good lord, I’ve been reading these comments……being Russian myself I can’t help but laugh about the whole sex appeal thing on our Prime Minister. Sure, he’s so far the best-looking we’ve had or that I’ve known of…but this whole ‘hero’ thing is all wrong. what you guys don’t know is that he allowed a ton of already endangered forests/national parks get sold off to oligopolies that specialize in building out-of-town mansions for the richer minorities that appeared back in the 90s from mafias, which took advantage of the country’s money and the perestroika. Thus, he helped bandits destroy land for useless overpriced housing that no one is rich enough to buy, because unlike those few, unfairly “privileged”, millions of Russian people are left penniless and poor compared to world standards. Thanks, Mr. ex-President. you could’ve done something about our government, which thanks to you just got 10 times more corrupt than it was. Aside from that, I’d like to point out that the czars, mabsba, are not related to the latter communism in ANY WAY. It was Karl Marx’s idea gone into the wrong hands after the Revolution. If you guys assume that it’s all about communism, czars, and some stupid sex appeal of a deceiving man, you’re absolutely off the road on what Russia’s history really is about. We’re the most unhappy people, and there’s nothing nice about that. VictoryNotVengeance is correct about us being an example- to other people so they can be aware of their own government at all times, and actually study what goes on. They’ll be far luckier than Russian people, who are not in power to decide, and not in power to see their leader for what he really is, and just how deceiving he is as was the Communist party, and the extravagant Empire before him.

    • mabsba says:

Why “Get a grip” ??? Why in the world would you wish to stifle someone’s expression of their own reality? Instead, you should be thanking RusArtist for his/her input and openness.
It makes no difference that this is a LOL-site. Much truth is expressed via humor and if humor leads to a wider discussion and better understanding of the world, isn’t that wonderful!?!
If you wish to stick only to the ridiculous off-topic comments these forums typically devolve into, then just skip anything else that’s over your head. Simple as that!

        • mabsba says:

          • RusArtist says:

by the way I’m a she, and my response was not “snide”.

    • bad fairie says:

not all americans are as ignorant as the loudest. most of us are aware that communism and the tzars have no connections, the rest, well they wear their badge of ignorance with pride. your country has faced horrors in the past and survived, i believe the strength of your people will come through again. after all, you survived the mongols, absorbed the tartars, and outlived the pograms(sp?) of stalin & lenin, not to mention your own weather.
where there is life, there is hope, it’s just hard to remember that sometimes. i don’t mean to be trite or condesending and don’t mean to come across that way at all.

    • VictoryNotVengeance says:

You are talking to Americans dude. They -love- cutting down forests for rich people. They -love- materialism. They love the idea that they are all there is on the planet.

And the reason I think Russians are an example is because they are the last group of people in the “western world” to stand up against the Czar. The went from peasant to knocking on Berlins door. They teach every peoples a lesson about standing up for the people. I only regret Lenin had such an untimely death and that Stalin was the man there to replace him.

One day, when the world is ready, the people will show our governments against with the same gall the Russian people used in 1917. And the leaders will be too close to escape.

      • KolKolKol says:

Nice. I love how everyone stereotypes us. Brings a smile to my face.
I’m not materialistic, nor do I like destroying nature for some greedy man, though some people do this not because they enjoy it but because they can’t seem to be able to get employment elsewhere. Sure some Americans do enjoy these things and like these things, doesn’t mean we ALL do. Just like not all Russians are vodka drinking commies as some still think they are (sheer ignorance if you ask me).
That being said, besides the stereotyping (and if that’s not what you meant by it I’m sorry), I truly appreciated your imput, as I did RusArtists. Mainly because I don’t know enough about politics or really anything to form an opinion, so it’s nice for me to hear both sides and everyones opinions.
I’m sorry for wasting everyones time, as well as the possible spelling errors.

    • Smurf says:

Nice post there, Russki. Pleasant change from inane trivia. You gave us some meat. Where’s the vodka? How many Russians has the potato syrup killed? Even more than Jack Daniels I guess. Has it damaged the national gene pool?

      • RusArtist says:

yes, it has, sadly. And guess what, Russians didn’t invent vodka, neither did we drink so much prior to the tragic happenings and wastes

    • PortlandMark says:

Whatever happened to the famous Russian spirit of “ничего”? Man, you almost seem like you care!

    • JB says:

RusArtist, You don’t need to “get a grip” — as one of the previous posters here suggested. Thank you for your insight. I feel for your situation.
But don’t worry about this one thing: we really are NOT deceived by him.

    • Aremis says:

“Aside from that, I’d like to point out that the czars, mabsba, are not related to the latter communism in ANY WAY.”

It was already corrected once, but as a for your information service to RusArtist the ‘commie czar’ comment is (I presume) a reference to a sign held by the so-called tea bag protests in the US. We have appointed advisors for various purposes in the US referred to as Czars, a tradition that goes all the way back to president Eisenhower. Many people are angry about so many appointments (though there are no more now than there were, several have just been dubbed czars now that didn’t carry the name before). And one person, who very much doesn’t understand Russian history, held up a sign protesting against the ‘commie czars’. The media grabbed hold of it and ran with it to such an extent that it has become almost the catch phrase for those who wish to criticize the teabaggers (as if their own chosen name isn’t problematic enough). And there you have it, the root of the ‘commie czar’ comment. So, in effect, your criticism of them was fulyl in agreement with their own criticism of the uneducated masses.

I hope I’m not putting words in your mouth, mabsba. I just thought I’d inject a little back story into it for the sake of sanity.

      • mabsba says:

Nah, I was a little ticked when I replied; yours was better. It’s more polite to clue people in, then get annoyed if they STILL can’t get that it’s a joke. :)

Frankly, for all one can say about Putin, I think he’s actually being way too soft on Chechen and other Islamic threats within his purview.

Hopefully, the Russian government will not be coaxed by the dhimmified West into giving up some of its territory for Sharia statelets; this will not cause them to calm down, be quiet, and keep to themselves forevermore. Rather, such appeasement will only encourage them to niblle away outside thier borders, to seek to grab more land away from the Infidel (who, under Islamic thinking, don’t have any right to own anything – much less territory – anyway.)

It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again – Islam has bloody borders. It always did, and it always will, for as long as it’s allowed to exist. It’s far worse than the old Communist ideology, and even Nazism, when it comes right down to it – because it can get away with being an untouchable “religion”, free from criticism, protected by feel-good dhimmis who like to think they’re wonderful by tolerating the intolerabale.

Let’s hope that, at least in this case, Putin can be the iron man psycho bastard he’s put up to be.

    • Smurf says:

I see you – in another life – were a Crusader that got the chop when the Muhammadans overran the UnHoly Land. Get over it. The towelheads won, way back and are long overdue for another win. It’s so hard to find on a map, so it must be tought for dumb-ass jihadists finding the joint…

      • Default User says:

Actually, Vlad the Impaler and Vladamir Putin are not the same person. The Impaler is dead and the Putin probably does more shooting than impaling.
Today’s random factoid: The Arabic word for crusader is considered highly insulting.

        • Aremis says:

Vlad Tepech (the Impaler), was even rumored to not have been nearly as brutal as his reputation suggests. His is yet another case where most of the legends and histories written about him, were written by those who had an unfavorable opinion. In this case that was the Germans. The Russians had a much higher opinion of him and even the stories that were as gruesome as the German stories appeared to have a German and not Russian origin. That said, I’m pretty sure the name was meant to borrow some of Tepech’s reputation and not an actual confusion between the two. I’m also pretty sure this post makes me sound pompous. Yay!

Another random factoid: Vlad Tepech (i’m to lazy to get the slavic spelling, sorry folks) was said to be Stoker’s model for Dracula. However, Tepech himself never went by that name. His father, also Vlad, used the nickname Dracul, meaning dragon, which was actually a reference to the Serbian Order of the Dragon, to which he belonged. His royal house also bore that name from that point on.

I think Dracula means son of the dragon, which is why Vlad the Impaler is considered Stokers model for Dracula. Though I could be misremembering that.

Nope, you’re right. I got it wrong. He was called by that surname during his life as well. slight clerical error on my part.

Oh boy. Actually Islam has not always had ‘bloody borders’ and for much of history Christians were as guilty, if not more so, than Muslims of the kind of rampant cruelty we often accuse them of. This is not a hippie ‘tolerance’ thing, it’s a basic historical fact. Christianity and Islam have been battling it out for centuries and neither has any less blood than the other.

They view us as a bunch of terrorists for supporting Israel and the Shah of Iran for our own political ends as well as trying to influence their internal politics and push their socieities into sin a debauchery. For Russia they see the crimes of Afghanistan and Chechnya. In nearly all cases, both sides held substantial blame for the outcome.

And while a massive crackdown may quiet them for a while, until we resolve the roots of our problems, it will just be a game of ‘whack-a-mole’ beating down a threat in one place only to have it pop up elsewhere. There are plenty of ungoverned territories throughout the world to house baddies of all political and religious persuasions. You will not stop them with guns. You probably won’t even slow them down.

that’s been going on forever. I noted that our demorgaphic sources say around 70% of Moscow consists of people of Islamic origin, none of them Russian, whereas the actual Russian population is in decline because they keep infiltrating our, ahem, religon and traditions.
