Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is the queen regnant of sixteen independent sovereign states known informally as the Commonwealth realms: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. She holds each crown separately and equally in a shared monarchy, as well as acting as Head of the Commonwealth, and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. As a constitutional monarch, she is politically neutral and by convention her role is largely ceremonial.
Her father, George VI, was the last Emperor of India. On his death in 1952, Elizabeth became Head of the Commonwealth, and queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon, later renamed Sri Lanka. During her reign, which at 57 years is one of the longest for a British monarch, she became queen of 25 other countries within the Commonwealth as they gained independence from Britain. She has been the sovereign of 32 individual nations, but half of them later became republics.
Elizabeth married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947. The couple have four children and eight grandchildren.

yea, i got to do an ordinal posting again ;)

Tuvalu? Now I know why the UK is very active on Global warming!

      • Smurf says:

That was absolute crap. Remember the war of Independence. Down with Lizzie. Hock her jewels to feed Bangladesh for two years. Kindly revert to your ludicrous ness agin. Quick. And stay away from the British Commonwealth. It stinks to high heaven, as I suspect Lizzie does.

Yay, now you’ve accomplished something with your life!

      • Default User says:

Um, my dog is dead, has been for some years now and according to your name you ‘did’ him. I really don’t think you should be bragging about humping rotted dog corpses. Just sayin’

  1. Shiny says:

    That poor, poor woman.

  2. parksj1 says:

Did you mean Miley Cyrus? And I don’t think anyone expects the Queen to earn her money. That’s why they have a real government that does all the actual running of the country.

  3. The Steve says:

I’m pretty sure everyone says she doesn’t earn her money, she inherited it like every Monarch before her by doing nothing more than being born to the right parents.

  4. Igloo McCoy says:

GODDAMNIT we get a good LOL and then we get this craption that even EWAdams would reject?! What the hell gods of PK?!

  5. iluvescookeys says:

An entire song?!? Jeez I can hardly stand listening to 5 seconds of it. How are her ears not bleeding?

  6. bob says:

She pays tax on her crown estates which exceeds the amount she gets from the public purse by a large amount.

So effectively she pays every British citizen £1.60 for the honour of going on boring foreign visits in their name.

    I think she’s earned a break.

    • VictoryNotVengeance says:

No. Wal-Mart door greeters earn a break. This old lady still exists as a symbol of all that is wrong with the world today.

      • Sindy says:

What, gaining an inheitance? Yes, that’s very wrong isn’t it. Your parents should spend yours while they still can.

        • Justacarolinian says:

          *snerk*

        • Nebton says:

Why do I deserve it more than some poor kid in [insert country here]?

That said, I got nothing against the Queen. From what I remember, the majority of Brits want her to remain in power, so it would seem that democracy requires a monarch in that case!

          • Default User says:

It’s not that they want her to remain in power so much as it’s they don’t want her son to get the power. As long as she’s Queen, Charles cannot be king.

            • Nebton says:

I think there’s a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B. There are a lot of Brits (and I suspect a slight majority) who love her without any consideration about her son.

              • viking gal, now with holiday mellow says:

And some my mother’s age love her for her parents, and also for their memory of her as a sweet, pretty and slightly scared young monarch who had just lost her parents.

              • Sindy says:

I don’t mind if it’s her or Charles. Anyone who talks to his plants is all right by me.

      • All that is wrong with the world today? I think you’re giving the irrelevant old lady too much credit.

      • Blade the Bladentologist says:

        Elaborate a bit on that.
I mean… yes, the British Empire subjugated both India and Hong Kong for a time… but gave them back to their people and their country respectively.
When we hand back all the land our forefathers stole from the indians, *then* I think we’re allowed to criticize the monarch of a foreign country for her effect on the world. lol

        • no no blade see this is america, we are allowed to protest stupid crap like that for no reason and really have nothing to back it up with basis in reality.

        • Default User says:

Hong Kong didn’t really want to be given back actually. There was some sort of treaty or agreement or shady back alley business deal that the British government had with China that said they would return Hong Kong in 2000, which they did, much to the distress of the Hong Kongians(?). They liked British rule much better than the idea of Chinese rule for some strange reason.

          • Nebton says:

According to Wikipedia, a native of Hong Kong is a Hongkonger. I kid you not.

          • Sindy says:

Maybe the strange reason is that we’re a democracy and China isn’t, but I could be wrong.

          • mabsba says:

DU is correct. Britain signed a 99 year lease for Hong Kong. When that ended, Hong Kong went back to China. The amount of displeasure about that event is probably best measured by the huge population increase that Vancouver, British Columbia, had just before that time. :)

            • Smurf says:

So, Mabsba, was that a win for HK or Vancouver, or a loss for Vancouver and a win for HK, or a win for Vancouver and a loss for HK… Or should we just make China give HK back to Her Moogesty and everyone can go home?

              • mabsba says:

You’d have to ask the Canadians that. I only met one Hongkonger who had moved to Vancouver, and he was pretty much of the attitude that it beat being under Mainland China’s rule, but I don’t think he really wanted to leave Hong Kong. I did visit BC recently, but it was Victoria, not Vancouver.

                • viking gal, now with holiday mellow says:

I was at a conference in Vancouver back in 2004, and both of my taxi drivers were a bit teed off. At the time, a lot of the adults had gone back to HK, and had left their late teen and early 20-something kids under the ‘control’ of an uncle or aunt in the neighborhood…except that the kids were not under control, and had lots of money to burn. Or so I was told…

                  • Blade the Bladentologist says:

Yup. Lots of kids living in fairly affluent neighbourhoods living the good life they were used to in HK. It was irritating.
I remember the massive influx of Chinese HKers to Vancouver. It was… well let’s say Vancouver has the second largest Chinatown in North America… and it’s now a solid 2nd place.
But hey. We’re all about the ‘cultural mosaic’ up here in teh Great White North. More bodies to heat the homes, I guess…

And hey mabsba! You came to Victoria? How’d you like it?

                    • mabsba (who was Ganesha yesterday but still has the tribute) says:

I missed your post yesterday. Yes, my sister and I took our mom (they both live in Seattle) to Victoria on the Clipper from Seattle in November. One bad rainstorm, then two days of a little light rain and actual sunny skies…in November! Unbelievably gorgeous. And, of course, full of incredibly polite Canadians (probably with added politeness due to it being waaaay out of tourist season :) ).

                    • Smurf says:

Hey Blade, what’s the beef? I like chop suey.

                  • Smurf says:

Yeh, taxi drivers are a great source of information… Especially who will win the next big game.

      • Green Beard the Canuck, Pirate of the Mighty Bow River says:

VNV, even as a generally liberal minded individual I find your analysis of her position severely myopic. Yes, historically the old monarchies were oppressive and would be ill suited for a modern government. The Queen however is not a monarch in this sense. Her current position is something akin to chief diplomat and MC for the formalities of state. She earns her keep. Most of the ‘trappings of the crown’ are owned by the state. What personal estates she has are taxed no differently from any other citizen of Great Britain and in fact she pays more to the state then she earns from it.

Tell me, do you believe your foreign diplomats living in grand embassies around the world are a ‘symbol of all that is wrong with the world today’?

Now the British Parliamentary system (of which both our particular forms of representative democracies are derivatives of), that may well be drastically in need of reform, but my in my opinion Her Majesty fulfills her role quite well.

        • Sindy says:

Thank you, Green Beard, couldn’t have put it better myself. And I agree on the bit about the parliamentary system needing reform.

        • Smurf says:

Green Beard, you are a disgrace to the Mighty Canucks… and you have just been permanently exiled to… England, where you will be obliged to camp outside Buckingham Palace and wait for a fleeting glimpse of Her Monstrosity.

        • Vila Restal says:

Actually she doesn’t rule. In fact she doesn’t do anythng in particular. She is merely a figurehead. The real ruler is Parliament. Oliver Cromwell stripped Royalty of all it’s powers thus making Britain a republic for the first time in its history. After the Restoration of the Monarchy under Charles I’s son, Charles II, the King came back but with massively stripped powers, these powers were stipped back and back untill you have the Royalty of today when they have the power to do nothing. They even have to sign the bills they are given without question as the other term they sign on bills “I will consider it”, i.e. get the hell out of here, can be completely ignored by the Government. to qoute Pratchett’s line in the Carpet People “In the Army you have the NCOs and the Officers. The NCOs do all the work, but the Officers are there just to give things a bit of class.” in this country it’s Parliament that does all the work the Queen just gives things a bit a of class (and provides money through tourism.) Her trips to Foreign climes could easily be done by the PM or another member of Parliament, but they are all too busy running the country (Or running it down depending on how you feel :-) ). The Queen basically acts as a President but with none of the powers. She cannot start a war, the civil list that used to provide part of her wealth has been drastically cut back. Basically she’s an anachronism of another age.

      • Smurf says:

VNV, you forgot the pope. That would clinch the deal; the two old crones together, in their monstrously flaunted jewelery and finery. A truer symbol of all that is wrong with the world today.

      • UnhappyVegemite says:

@VNV I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her, and she isn’t entirely irrelevant either, Rando, she does hold considerable political power, should she choose to wield it and she’s been closely involved in politics for most of her life so her experience as an adviser to political leaders around the world is not to be underestimated, especially today where everyone in democratic countries seems to be bitterly dividing themselves over 2 hopelessly flawed ideologies (right and left).

        • Smurf says:

Vege, Vila Resta, all the way from England, went to considerable time and effort to convince you that the silly old bag is merely a figurehead; she does nothing (as do any of the rest of the bludgers) she has no power, and is worse than useless. Only people like you take her seriously.

          • Vila Restal says:

Vege – Considerable power??? She has none. Royalty used to have considerable power, she is now a rubber stamp whos main job is to sign the bills the government enacts. It is the government that has the power. If she tries to get uppity and does something outwith her remit there would be a constitutional upcry, ending up with the Queen being kicked out. Remember ever since the Civil War, Parliament has gone out of it’s way to ensure that Royalty has little or no power to do anything (they cannot raise taxes, make wars, make diplomatic decisions or other major powers. Everything is run for Royalty by the Government)

    • Justacarolinian says:

I think Keithybabes (sorry if I’m incorrect on who) came on here one day and explained the Royal Family’s finances. And while they certainly have their share of family issues, it did seem quite honorable of how they handle money. If I remember correctly, they do huge amounts for charity, actually adding up to more than what they are given.
And I would also think that they have quite an influence in motivating others to give to charities too. It’s funny how history remembers the crazy monarchs, but rarely gives credit to the ones that excel.

      • Sindy says:

        Exactly.

And to recap for those who don’t know, the Bristish government takes the income from land owned by the Crown estates, including land in Manhattan, and gives the Royal family a token amount in return, which is a lot less than the land earns.

Also, for the record, the Queen refunds the country of all the money taken for Royalty except hers and the Duke of Edinburgh’s. So in the long term it’s only these two who get anything from us.

It’s also true to note that charities gain a great deal more from income if they have a member of Royalty as their Patron than if they have anybody else.

    Question marks are overrated?

  8. Nilla says:

What Miley did was horrific. There is no way she should have been allowed to dance, wear what she did and sing Party in the USA in front of the Queen. Did Miley Cyrus really think the whole thing was a good idea?

  9. Here4tehlulz says:

This is probably the closest the Queen has ever come to an assassination. God save teh Queen ;)
