Can’t say as I entirely agree. I may not agree with Obama, but calling him a sympathizer sounds like exaggerated hearsay meant to smear him for the sake of smearing him. Like most of what people say about G.W. Bush.
As for the bowing, it’s known as a greeting in some countries. If the degrees of his arc were a little low, I chock that up to just…not being used to bowing. I’d probably have done the same thing in that situation.
It’s bad enough the internet is infected with close-minded assumptions and lies believed to be facts (because they hold entertainment value for some) about the last President. I’d really rather avoid the same thing with our current Commander-In-Chief.
Actually the bowing thing is pretty stupid. It’s a sign of submission, where as Bush up above it’s a sign of respect and friendship. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!! The US should never be in “submission” of anyone, just as we would never expect other national leaders bow to our President.
Bowing is not necessarily a sign of submission. Remember that in cross-cultural interaction, either side may be doing something not for purposes relating to their own culture, but for the benefit of the other. Bowing in Western culture is not a sign of submission but a sign of (hopefully mutual) respect. In Asia, it’s a sign of respect, and recognition of hierarchy (both parties will bow; one will bow slightly lower in deference). In Japan they’ve mastered the bow-and-shake, incorporating Western-style handshakes without relinquishing their respectful bowing.
Getting on one’s knees (making oneself physically vulnerable) is a sign of submission, but bowing is not.
And shaking hands, while not exactly submissive, is a symbolic gesture showing that you are not armed. Therefore, harmless/armless.

He screwed it up, yes, but he didn’t intend to bow in submission. It’s a pretty minor gaffe, and I’m sure the Japanese understood what he was trying to do. I’m kinda surprised with his limited foreign experience that someone didn’t prep him better for that.
The problem is he never said he “messed up”. I also don’t find it to be a minor gaffe, it wasn’t the first time he “gaffed” bowing. I think he intentionally did it to show the world that the US is “humble”, to try and win some “See with Obama in charge USA will no longer meddle in things and is subserviant to other cultures”. I really think he was trying to send a message.

The Burka is a bad comparison. It is politicized in the US and elsewhere in Western democracies. Regardless, it would not be a simple gesture, it would be adopting serious religious procedures, not a simple gesture considered similar to a handshake. I don’t think the Burka is a bad comparison. It goes against Western culture (as does bowing to equals) standard procedures. Obama’s bow to an Asian eye would be discerned as a subordinate apologizing to his superior (deep low bow held for 1 to 2 seconds). The bow you described is of a severe difference in social stature, or one who was defeated in battle.

Whether it’s a good thing or not is yet to be determined, I think there needs to be a happy medium than what he’s done, however most of his posturing has been to show a “softer” side of America. Remember, Afghanastan deciscion was a good three or four moths after the first couple of bows. (The Asian one wasn’t his first bow).
Maybe not so much a “softer” side, but a saner side? I have far more respect for more quiet diplomacy than the weapon rattling kind, and I know I am not alone.
