Guess he told us the price of rice in China….huh???

    • Kn0wledge1ne says:

Ordinal. Now. And make it good. I’m having a sucky day at work.

      • dissimilitude says:

Arborio rice is an Italian short-grain rice. It is named after the town of Arborio in the Po Valley, where it is grown. Cooked, the rounded grains are firm, creamy, and chewy, due to the higher amylopectin starch content of this rice variety, thus they have a starchy taste of their own, yet blend well with other flavors. It is used to make risotto, although Carnaroli and Vialone Nano are more commonly used to prepare the dish. Arborio rice is also used for rice pudding.

Botanically speaking, Arborio is a cultivar of the Japonica subspecies of Oryza sativa.

Thank you W. Bush for selling us to the Chinese!

  3. Anderson says:

I wonder what’d happen is China would stop pumping money into the US to keep it afloat. The money is being sent back to China anyway through trade, but the breaking point where China decides to cut the cord would be interesting to watch.

China should dump America like the sack of trash it is. About time we got a new sole superpower.

And drug dealers, and drug users. Hell crime would drop in America if China ruled it.

Oh well, maybe in 20 years.

          • Wino says:

What is wrong with the drug users?

They don’t work and provide a tax $$ for us all.

              • dissimilitude says:

Hmmm….actually, anecdotal evidence shows that plenty of drug users work. Otherwise, nobody would be blowing their f’ing random drug screens at work, genius.

                  *snerk*

                  • dissimilitude says:

Somehow I figured you could probably vouch for that, too! (Seriously, I don’t personally think an employee that smokes pot off the clock is any worse than one that has a couple of beers when he gets off, but if you know your job is on the line and you’ll be tested? Stupid, stupid, stupid!)

                    • froofrou says:

We fired one two weeks ago for being so trashed on the job that he couldn’t remember being fired when he woke up the next day (he had finished his last beer as he was walking in the door), and we fired one a couple of days after that for popping positive for THC.

They’re all idiots. It’s not like we work behind a desk……those machines they work around could kill you if you’re being stupid

                      • Wino says:

Sounds like the Chinese will not have to take these prior employees away in Death vans. They may take themselves out of the gene pool.

                        • dissimilitude says:

Lol…trust me, there’s employees in non-safety-sensitive positions being fired for this stuff, too (I can’t speak to Froo’s workplace, but in general).

I absolutely agree that people shouldn’t be showing up for work impaired (by anything), though!

                        • Wino says:

I know. There are a lot of jobs out there where it is unclear how some drugs would directly impact performance, unless they were doing it on the job.

                        • froofrou says:

I’ve got some idiots working for me who don’t realize that popping a Vicod1n before work is a bad idea…

                        • dissimilitude says:

Well, the issue I have with the current standards they use to test for marijuana use is that it tests for metabolites which remain present in the body for weeks, and have nothing to do with whether a person is currently impaired. Actually, from what I know about the testing, I suspect that if somebody (hypothetically) smoked up at work (when they hadn’t been in the months prior) and was tested while still impaired, they’d probably test clean, as the metabolites wouldn’t be created and in their urine yet.

                        • mabsba says:

I had heard that there was a more immediate test (along the lines of a breathalyzer), but I don’t remember who said that. If it was one of the regulars, maybe they will pop in and give us some info on it. But diss is right about the tests most commonly used right now.
As far as jobs go, I can understand if there’s a security clearance involved because any illegal activity makes you subject to duress. But I would bet that more people have compromised their integrity over gambling debts (legal or illegal) than smoking pot and I don’t remember them asking about that.

                        • dissimilitude says:

As long as it’s illegal, I can see the security clearance argument….but to run a cash register at the dollar store, it seems a bit invasive.

                        • oɹɹɐɥɔ says:

Yes, the current pot tests do test for metabolites. There is very little actual THC in your pee so they test for metabolites. Any fancy shmancy tests would be too expensive for a regular workplace.

MOST drug tests test for metabolites. When they find morphine or codeine in your pee, they suspect heroin. But you don’t have heroin in your pee. Ir metabolises into morphine. *sigh*

                        • I Like Peanut Butter the Conservatvie With a Heart. Now STFU!!! says:

Diss: I believe it’s more to do with the criminal act. Many places have “standards” for people caught doing criminal acts. Since arrests are public record anyone theoritically can know if someone hires a criminal. Regardless of the crime, humans are fickle and tend to gravitate away from criminals, and palces that hire them. I tend to think give people a second chance, but not a third. :-) Also it could show “irresponibility”. Not that I agree with it, that’s the arguement.

                        • mabsba says:

Personally, unless there is a security issue, I think blanket workplace testing is a violation of the fourth amendment right against unreasonable search. What you do off the job in most cases has no effect on your workplace performance. Actually, alcohol, which is legal, is more likely to affect workplace performance due to hangovers. My son’s school suspended several students for having pot brownies at school. (Those who brought the brownies were expelled.) They can return, provided they agree to random drug testing, which is reasonable. It would be unreasonable to subject the entire grade to drug testing because some members had drugs.

For a company to do unjustified drug testing is saying that the company has more constitutional rights than the people working for it. If a company can do, why can’t the govt? Your child can’t enter hs until he submits to a drug test?

                        • I Like Peanut Butter the Conservatvie With a Heart. Now STFU!!! says:

Mabs: Government does do that as a condition of employeement. All federal positions, contractors, etc are subject to random drug screening as a condition of employment.

Hey no one’s as get out of my private life as I am, but I understand you have conditions of employment. You agree when you get your paycheck to subject yourself to random drug testing, you agree to it. If you don’t want work somewhere that doesn’t have it (I know hard to do, but once again it’s a condition of).

To enter a federal building and even most state buildings, your condition to enter is “right to inspection prior to entry”. How about to enter schools, your children are subject to search, even their locker is, b/c it’s “public property”.

                        • oɹɹɐɥɔ says:

I think they should only drugs test if there’s an accident at work, but that’s just me.. *noms moderated medication*

                        • mabsba says:

ILPB, in general, you seem to like to give rights to businesses over people. I am the opposite. It’s the right who always screams “OMG THE SLIPPERY SLOPE” if it’s about gun control, but when it comes to other rights, well, then it’s reasonable. Drug testing used to only be done for security clearances or bonding. Now it’s a commonplace and commonly accepted intrusion into our personal affairs. Why is an employer entitled to know if I smoke pot when I am not at work? Because it’s illegal? So are many things I can access on the internet. Will the next thing be an internet history search before employment?

                        • oɹɹɐɥɔ says:

If I recall correctly, speeding is also against the law.

                        • froofrou says:

In our case, we drug test for employment for the very reason you stated: we work with machines that could eat people. If someone it stupid enough to have smoked a joint right before he walked into the door, then we don’t need him getting killed before we catch him with reasonable suspicion. I’ve known waaaaaaaaay too many functional drunks and potheads to give anyone the benefit of the doubt with regards to pre-employment testing.

At my particular company, we don’t randomly drug test. It’s in the policy that we CAN, but I don’t think we ever have. We only test for cause, in the case of accidents, or if someone has a work injury.

You just KNOW Obama and Biden are tokin’ it up out in the Rose Garden….

                        • charro says:

I agree people shouldn’t be doing drugs at work, nor should the be doing them prior to work when it will affect their performance. But why should they care what we do in our off time?

Criminals need jobs too. If you’ve served whatever sentence was meted out by the judge, you’ve paid your debt to society and shouldn’t be further punished for it by losing your job or being denied employment as well. That’s why we have the justice system.

                        • charro says:

Also, what I meant to say Froo, is yes, you can’t complain when you get busted by the cops for doing something illegal.

But what if your boss pulled you in the office Monday morning and said “You passed me on the freeway on Saturday which is your day off, I was doing the speed limit therefore you were speeding I will have to let you go because I can’t have lawbreakers working for me”?

It was your day off, it had nothing to do with work, why should it affect your job?

                        • The Amazing Rando says:

Well, I think there are exceptions to not denying people employment based on past convictions. For example, my wife’s company handles large volumes of money. You can’t work there if you have prior convictions, especially if it’s for, say, stealing money.

              • oɹɹɐɥɔ says:

                *punches methree in the face*

Fvck off sh!t for brains. My husband was employed. When I was snorting an 8 ball of coke every night I was employed. I still am employed, I just don’t snort an 8 ball of coke every night.

                • I Like Peanut Butter the Conservatvie With a Heart. Now STFU!!! says:

Only nights that end in “ight”?!?!?!?! ;-)

And would we technically call Drug Dealers employeed? I mean they do by lavish things like Escalades (buy American), lots of jewlery, etc…. and they pay in cash so they don’t tend to default on Credit Cards which hurt the banks…. HMMMM……

              • The Amazing Rando says:

They provide a tax $$ for us all? They provide us with tax money??? Then what’s the problem, dude?

          • mothergoose says:

perhaps you’d be interested in seeing how George Carlin would clean up America and rid it of crime…
