Currently, no it is not possible. Oil is used to produce energy, plastics, paving materials, building materials, clothing, medicine, etc. Oil is used for many products, it is virtually impossible to go without. You’re wearing products that are made of or made possible by the oil industry.

BP wouldn’t have even drilled this well if our government hadn’t banned drilling in 85% of the shallower gulf waters. BP had an agreement with Louisiana to drill in the shallows but our brilliant government stepped in and vetoed the deal and forced BP to drill deep.

Seriously… it’s a joke. Besides if the reverse had happened and Amoco bought BP and spilled oil in the Channel and the Brits began referring to it as American Oil Company, no one in the US would give a crap that you call the company by it’s former name. A history teacher of mine brought me to a not-so-alarming realization, oil will NOT cease to be used until ALL of Earth’s oil supply is depleted. It’s just not gunna happen. I honestly can’t wait until the supply is so low people will freak out and strap solar panels to their oh-so-needed escalators (idk how ud get sun inside though…).

I personally don’t like the idea of individual “blame” at all. Unless, of course, someone did something along the lines of: “hey lets drop an anchor right on that pipe right there”. I mean, no one could have completely seen this coming. I do blame BP’s parents though, for not spoiling the kid. Kinda like Stephen (biggest freakout guy). And if you (just wondering) really are some BP guy, it would help to spell-check when speaking online.

I think the issue is largely national pride and standing, but it is also true that the dropping share prices of BP will affect the UK’s economy. I think it’s overblown though since BP is one of the largest companies in the world. There is no way that it is going to fail as a result of this spill.

WHY play this BLAME GAME?? Why not spend all this energy (no pun intended) on ways to CLEAN UP THE MESS! This is either a natural disaster or sabotage! Only the latter would give us a need to find the one to BLAME!

*Sigh* which brings me back to the need to find a better sandbox. Given how underreported atrocities in other countries are, it is a reasonable assumption that their full extent in unknown.
Thanks for removing all context from my comment on people caring about what they see. perhaps I could have phrased it as what people see and know. 1000 people dying in a mining accident is a statistic, 1 person who is you mother, father, brother or sister is a tragedy. If you mourn the tragedy of strangers to the same extent as you do people close to then i applaud your emotional stamina.
What is close to you has much more personal impact. Something good could come from this.

as an outsider (french here), I really don’t understand this issue. Why britishs feel offend? The company was attacked, not the country. Is that because americans speak about “british petrolum” instead of “bp”, or because it ruins value of bp?

In first case, i don’t think american people will be angry against british people, but just against their huge industries (just like huge abusing industries everywhere else).

In the second case, well, it’s the good time for an other british company to buy bp for cheap (since it is at its lower), change the name, and use available money to 1°) preserve employment, 2°) enhance security, 3°) research on ecology. That will a an successful company, since it will be what everyone want.

Actually, according to the terms of the lease agreement, Transocean IS responsible for the rig maintenance. In fact, there are numerous letters ON FILE from BP to Transocean about problems on the rig. Transoceanic’s response was that the rig was up to spec according to the new specifications signed into effect by President Obama and therefore no maintence was necessary.

In this respect, both Transoceanic and BP are legally and ethically in the right. Morally?? Well, everywhere else the rig would not have been up to spec, so I tend to think that Transoceanic should have done the asked for maintenance anyway.

Unfortunately, our President chooses to point the finger at BP to draw attention from his own screw-up of lowering requirements (earlier, if you recall, he blamed the Bush administration for not ‘conveying how important those standards were to his Administration’ but not even his fellow Democrats could swallow THAT much B.S.).

As usual, the “Washington Two-Step” is in full motion and the 15 sec attention span of our public is going to let themselves be distracted… again.

As of over a decade ago, it’s just been BP. Just BP. BP doesn’t stand for anything anymore, that’s just the name of the company.

Plus it employs more Americans than Brits, and pays three times more tax to the American government than the British one.

Technically, although it is partly the public’s fault for even using oil from rigs like the Deepwater Horizon and possibly the government’s fault for not acting in time, it is mostly BP’s fault, because BP is kicking back when millions of birds and fish are dying off, economies crashing, lifestyes ruined, and millions of gallons of oil wasted. What are you, the CEO?

I for one have been seeing this as an opportunity for Shell to take over BP from the start.
It would be a good growing possibility for Shell, and it would make the UK less sensitive, since Shell has already taken over a British oil company in the past, so it partly is already British.
