Controversy Sells

Jul. 25, 2011

political pictures - rupert murdoch - Controversy Sells

An editorial cartoon appearing in the Rupert Murdoch-owned Times of London. It features offensively-drawn, presumably-African children with bellies bloated from hunger with the title “Priorities.” One of the children is saying “we had a bellyful of phone hacking.” … No such thing as bad publicity indeed.

In the Next Issue of Tiger Beat

Jul. 25, 2011

political pictures - david wu - In the Next Issue of Tiger Beat

The sex scandal fairy has come TWICE this year so far! (I must have been good in 2010!) Representative David Wu (D-OR) has been accused of an inappropriate sexual encounter on the teenage daughter of a friend:

The encounter allegedly took place around Thanksgiving, capping a problematic autumn during which his staff considered hospitalizing him after he displayed erratic behavior. The context, according to the Oregonian, the paper that first reported on the incident:

A distraught young woman called U.S. Rep. David Wu’s Portland office this spring, accusing him of an unwanted sexual encounter, according to multiple sources. When confronted, the Oregon Democrat acknowledged a sexual encounter to his senior aides but insisted it was consensual, the sources said. The woman is the daughter of a longtime friend and campaign donor. She apparently did not contact police at the time.

OK so technically since he has not stepped down and the scandal is still in its infancy, it would have been better for me to select a more neutral picture. But then I found this one of him dressed as a tiger and I was like, “my first and foremost duty is to teh lulz.” Which is what I tell myself to preserve my journalistic integrity and so I can sleep at night.

An Update on Norway

Jul. 25, 2011

political pictures - anders behring breivik - An Update on Norway

Norway is still trying to put the pieces together of the July 22nd tragedy that claimed the lives of an estimated 93 people. Contrary to initial speculations that al-Qaeda or another Islamic fundamentalist group carried out the dual attacks, the man responsible is Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian who acted alone. From The Independent:

A manifesto, written by Breivik, was also discovered. The 1500 page document entitled “A European Declaration of Independence” reveals a troubling ideology. “Let us fight together with Israel,” Breivik writes, “with our Zionist brothers against all anti-Zionists.” In a section headed “Controversial principles”, the manifesto continues:

Supports the deportation of all Muslims from Europe Pro-Israel (pro-Zionism/Israeli nationalism, supports the deportation of Muslims from theWest Bank and the Gaza strip) Pro-Boer/Afrikaner (supporting a partition of South Africa into two parts).

The section also lists China, India, the Phillipines and Sri Lanka as countries that all Muslims should be deported from.

So instead of an organization related to Islam, it was one fiercely anti-Islam homegrown right-winger. Fox News correspondents did not take this disappointing turn of events well. Here we have two of them erroneously discuss why this is the first one of the first non-Islamic terrorist attack since Oklahoma City in 1995:

Notice how they gloss over completely fail to mention Breivik’s far-right beliefs and go on to chat about how Islamic terrorism is a big problem in Scandinavia. Not sure whether to categorize these two switching back to Fox-approved talking points as opportunistically pushing their own hateful agenda, or that they’ve just had the free will beaten out of them and can no longer form independent thoughts.
