i would say that yes man does use god and religion as an excuse/ reason to fight and to war.
take the vikings a race bred to believe that fighting and dying in battle would lead to valhalla or heaven if you would. the crusades may have started out as a completely religous reason in the first one, but they quickly degenerated based on mans desire and greed and coveting anothers goods, wives and land. it is not the religions fault in most cases but the mans. just my personal opinion. oh and sorry if my english is bad… it is not my first nor is it my second language

the relifion itself is not at fualt here but rather the man that professes his own personal righteousness and beliefs.
you are right that many of the wars have been fought over religion, or religious views. but all of these wars were started by man for mans benefit. it is unfair to characterize a religion based of the actions of those who “profess” to believe in it. i suggest studying the varying faiths on your own and finding out for yourself before you make such an argument. and to say that if there was no religions ppl would not fight is completely biased and not based off of facts. take hitler, napolean, the romans, vienam, any number of conflicts. some are fought for glory, others are fought for expansionist reasons, while others are for nothing more than spite or dislike, want or greed.
it is in human nature to be fallible and to strive for something that is out of reach and when two or more factions reach for the same star they inevitably end up in one and anothers way and as such they quarrel

I made no comment about abortion, I consider that a politically influenced dilemma. The statement that because something didn’t exist in Biblical times it is permissible and/or excusable is exceptionally faulty, however.

As for ignoring passages in Leviticus because you would choose to ignore other passages in the same book is hardly a good argument for questioning whether or not something is considered sinful or not. The previous chapter condemns theft and various forms of dishonesty. Shall we dispense with those as well? Agreed, we are not all fundamentalist Jews, so perhaps one might care to attempt to dodge all rules by claiming others aren’t relevant to Gentiles (I cut my sideburns, after all, and hardly consider that sinful)? Try 1 Corinthians 6, then? Romans 1? It’s futile to claim homosexuality is not ‘a sin’ since the word ‘sin’ is defined by religion, not society. Prevailing social ideology does not equal theology.

I still stand by the reason I felt the need to post in the first place – the statement that we’re all made in God’s image and therefore homosexuality is condoned. Homosexual relations are condemned in numerous places in the Bible, typically referred to as a ‘perversion’ just like pedophilia is a perversion, necrophilia is a perversion … I question the complete lack of logic involved there, as by that thinking, child prostitution should be acceptable, nay, natural! Because we’re all made in God’s image, right?

As for abortion, it’s a subject I’m happy to discuss but certainly not via commentary on a public forum. It’s a volatile enough subject already, no? Know that I support same sex unions on a social standpoint, though I do not, have not, and will not ever accept the claim that homosexuality is ‘natural’ in any definition of the word. A simple lesson in genetic culling destroys that idea immediately. But I digress.

The Bible does not specifically state that abortion is a sin. The passage most commonly cited as relating to abortion is about assault and miscarriage. It essentially states that if someone assaults a woman and she miscarries, the perpetrator owes her husband a fine. If additional damage is done, then the husband can harm him in an equal way.

Many people seriously question the validity of using Leviticus as an argument about homosexuality, as the same book contains numerous laws that are completely ignored these days.

I am a Christian, I however do have a mind of my own that has not been tainted by the legalism of the church. I have my own opinions of what I am taught and they don’t always agree with the lessons of the churches I have gone to. I am expected to believe that being gay is perverse and a sin, and that this is a choice of gay people. But I can’t believe that people would just “choose” to live a life style that is more difficult to pursue than a traditional one. Do gay people just crave attention? I doubt that anyone would choose to be gay just because they want to, for them it can’t be different than me choosing to be with a man, there just isn’t a choice in the matter. I think its sad that we judge other’s sin as worse than our own. I think the bible says that all sin is equal (even though I can’t see lying to my kids about holiday characters is just as sinful as raping someone, but so be it). People do the most horrible crimes in the name of religion and justify their own hate and prejudice on religious brainwashing. No one will ever agree that their religion is wrong and sadly so many people will die or kill to stand up for the theories and faith practices that they believe to be law. These people in my opinion are weak, insecure and susceptible to persuasion. If God didn’t want me to think for my self he wouldn’t have given me a brain he would have created a robot.
