Been seeing comments that say “KONY 2012″ with multiple upvotes on any YouTube videos lately? How about Facebook friends sharing a video about the plight of child soldiers in Africa?
“KONY 2012″ is all part of a highly successful viral campaign by a less-than-savory nonprofit called Invisible Children Inc. While Invisible Children might be good at getting the digital word out that Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, is a really really bad guy (which he is!), you might want to think twice about jumping on this internet fauxtivism trend. For those interested, The Daily What provides an excellent article about Invisible Children Inc’s shady practices.

An editorial cartoon appearing in the Rupert Murdoch-owned Times of London. It features offensively-drawn, presumably-African children with bellies bloated from hunger with the title “Priorities.” One of the children is saying “we had a bellyful of phone hacking.” … No such thing as bad publicity indeed.
