MIT released a report in which they observed that a computer got better at playing the video game Civilization by reading the manual. After comprehending the actual language of the written advice meant for human players, the computer’s rate of victory jumped from 46% to 79%.
[...] the system was able to reproduce 80 percent of the steps that a human reading the same instructions would execute. In the case of the computer game, it won 79 percent of the games it played, while a version that didn’t rely on the written instructions won only 46 percent.
So, they basically forced a computer to read a manual and improve at a game all about driving the course of human progress… Pitchforks at the ready.
