A report by noted academic Kamal Subhi submitted to the Saudi Arabian monarchy asserts that lifting the ban on women driving will encourage premarital sex and ruin the tradition of virgin brides in that country. The ban has stood unofficially since 1990, when 47 women drove down the streets of Riyadh, only to be suspended from work for two years and widely admonished by religious leaders. Subhi’s findings are believed to be backlash against recent social changes proposed by 87 year-old King Abdullah that would allow more freedom to women.
