The Real Deal on KONY 2012

Mar. 8, 2012

political pictures - The Real Deal on KONY 2012

Been seeing comments that say “KONY 2012″ with multiple upvotes on any YouTube videos lately? How about Facebook friends sharing a video about the plight of child soldiers in Africa?

“KONY 2012″ is all part of a highly successful viral campaign by a less-than-savory nonprofit called Invisible Children Inc. While Invisible Children might be good at getting the digital word out that Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, is a really really bad guy (which he is!), you might want to think twice about jumping on this internet fauxtivism trend. For those interested, The Daily What provides an excellent article about Invisible Children Inc’s shady practices.

Lulzsec Betrayed by Leader, BBC Posts Ragefaces

Mar. 6, 2012

political pictures - Anonymous Betrayed by Leader, BBC Posts Ragefaces

Reports indicate that hacking group Lulz Security, commonly known as “Lulzsec,” has been betrayed by its leader. 28 year-old New Yorker Hector Xavier Monsegur, known online as “Sabu,” has apparently been working with the FBI for months to bring down his own buddies. These efforts have culminated in “a string of arrests” today in the United States, England, and Ireland. Lulzsec was responsible for cyber attacks on Sony Pictures, the CIA, and senate.gov, along with a number of video game-related websites. They are an offshoot of the larger worldwide hacking group Anonymous.

Their logo, which is otherwise known as the feel like a sir Rageface, is ever so delightful on the homepage of the BBC.

Expect Us

Jan. 27, 2012

political pictures - acta - poland - Expect Us

Left-wing Polish parliament members don Guy Fawkes masks as an homage to internet vigilante group Anonymous. These members oppose the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a European treaty that is similar to SOPA. Unfortunately, most members of the European Union signed up for ACTA yesterday, bringing it closer to ratification.
