political pictures - space shuttle landing - atlantis - Welcome Home

The final space shuttle flight drew to a close today as Atlantis touched down at Cape Canaveral. In the words of astronaut Sandy Magnus:

“Every vehicle has its life. We’ve known the shuttle is going to retire for a very long time. Knowing this was the normal plan, you want to celebrate the shuttle. You want to acknowledge all the hard work that people have done for 30 years because it is an important part of our country.”

“It’s hard to say goodbye. It’s like saying goodbye to an old friend.”

Father and son duo Chris and Kenneth Bray took a picture together at the first and last space shuttle launches. Captioned “the photo we waited 30 years to complete,” on Chris’ Flickr page, it is a profound tribute to an adventurous time in our history.

The Washington Post also published this infographic about the future of space exploration. Click the picture to see the rest of it!

Final Voyage to the Final Frontier

Jul. 8, 2011

The 135th and final space shuttle mission launched today, as Atlantis took off from Cape Canaveral and closed the curtain on 30 years of NASA history. The crew will be delivering a cargo of food to the international space station, and are expected to arrive there on Sunday.

But! Space is really busy lately, guys! SPAAAAAACCEEEEE!
Meanwhile on our favorite ringed planet, Saturn, there is a ginormous storm the size of Earth underway. In case you needed a reminder about how insignificantly tiny we are!

Moving on, on July 12 Neptune will celebrate its first trip around the sun since it’s human discovery in 1846. Happy Birthday Neptune!

The Final Endeavor

May. 16, 2011

political pictures - nasa - The Final Endeavor

A turtle walks by the site of today’s launch of the space shuttle Endeavor. Man, turtles don’t even care, do they? The epitome of human knowledge, aspiration, and technology as we outstretch our arms to the celestial heavens, and that turtle doesn’t even throw a sideways glance. Bet it would just shrug to hear that this is the final flight of Endeavor, which has taken us to the stars 25 times now since 1992. Just keep crossing those rocks, turtle, you’re so hard to please.
