The German newspaper Die Zeit appears to have portrayed Japan’s former prime minister Taro Aso instead of current PM Naoto Kan in this illustration mocking Angela Merkel’s role in the G-8. The inspiration was a photo of Aso and Silvio Berlusconi taken at the 2009 G-8 Summit. Other members reflect the current G-8 roster, such as David Cameron drawn instead of Gordon Brown. Some Japanese internet users have attributed this to the fact that Japanese PM’s change frequently (there have been 17 since 1981). I’m going to go ahead and chalk it up to an old-fashioned secret admirer. Aso is his artistic muse!!
